Civil Engineering Technologist Job Type Technologists / Technicians Organization Town of Olds Closing date Jul 17, 2026 Job Description THE OPPORTUNITY We have an exciting opportunity for a Civil Engineering Technologist to join the Town of Olds, Alberta. This role supports the planning, design, construction, and lifecycle management of municipal infrastructure, with a primary focus on technical delivery and project execution. Reporting to the Director of Infrastructure, the position will lead and support large-scale capital projects, including underground and road rehabilitation, roadway design, intersection assessments, and master planning initiatives. The role will also contribute to development engineering reviews, shallow utility permitting, and the ongoing update of engineering design standards and specifications. Working within a small, collaborative team, this position blends both field and office responsibilities. This includes construction inspection, contractor coordination, technical analysis, and maintaining accurate infrastructure and asset data within GIS systems. The ideal candidate is adaptable and able to move between technical engineering challenges such as water and sewer systems and broader municipal infrastructure issues including road repairs and intersection performance. They are self-sufficient, apply sound technical judgment, and support efficient project delivery by proactively bringing forward solutions while managing competing priorities. RESPONSIBILITIES - Support municipal infrastructure projects involving roads, water, wastewater, stormwater, and development servicing. - Draft and revise engineering drawings using AutoCAD Civil 3D. - Perform design calculations and prepare technical designs for municipal infrastructure work. - Write and edit specifications and technical documentation to Town standards. - Complete quantity take-offs and build cost and material estimates for assigned work. - Inspect construction work in the field, coordinate materials testing, and document compliance with drawings, specifications, contracts, and Town standards. - Coordinate assigned project tasks, contractor interface, documentation, deficiencies, closeout, commissioning, and warranty follow-up. - Conduct and document field investigations, including layout checks and verification of soils, drainage, and existing services. - Review shallow utility permits and development-related engineering submissions, and prepare technical comments for planning and development files. - Support procurement, budget inputs, and capital planning by preparing documentation and maintaining accurate project and infrastructure records. - Provide day-to-day direction and support to the Seasonal Engineering Student during the seasonal work period. QUALIFICATIONS - Diploma in Civil, Construction, or Engineering Technology, or equivalent combination of education and experience. - C.E.T. designation in good standing with ASET, or ability to obtain within 6 months. - Approximately 4 years of experience in municipal engineering, infrastructure design, construction, or contract administration. - Proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D and Microsoft Office. - Experience with GIS and infrastructure records management (ArcGIS and or QGIS). - Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver’s Licence. - Valid Intermediate First Aid and CPR AED Level C certificate. KEY COMPETENCIES - Solid knowledge of municipal infrastructure design, drafting, construction methods, and materials. - Construction inspection, materials testing coordination, and compliance documentation - Understanding of contract conformance and project documentation. - Experience supporting procurement documentation, capital planning inputs, and project closeout. - Ability to manage infrastructure records and asset data with accuracy. - Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and problem solving. - Organization and ability to manage multiple priorities. - Communication and coordination with contractors, consultants, and internal stakeholders.
