Substation Physical Design Engineer, Power Delivery (Airdrie)

Position Intermediate Substation Physical Design Engineer Location Alberta, British Columbia or Saskatoon, Western Canada Overview Design and deliver detailed physical design packages for medium to high voltage utility substations, supporting Canada’s renewable energy expansion. Responsibilities Perform detailed design of medium to high voltage substations. Develop one‑line diagrams, general arrangements, elevation views, conduit and cable routing, substation physical layouts, ground grid layouts, and equipment details. Execute calculations for lightning protection, battery sizing, AC station service sizing, conduit and cable tray sizing, and related parameters. Create technical specifications and design criteria. Occasionally travel as required. Qualifications 5–10 years of hands‑on experience designing substations from 15 kV to 138 kV; experience with 230–500 kV considered an asset. Ability to transform a design basis memorandum or scope of work into a complete, coordinated physical design package with minimal oversight. Experience leading multiple brownfield and greenfield projects concurrently while maintaining quality and accuracy. Proficiency with MicroStation or AutoCAD; exposure to BIM tools such as Inventor, P4A, or Primtech is an asset. Engineering degree or technology diploma in Electrical Engineering and a P.Eng. or P.L.(Eng.) designation, or intent to register.
