Defence Industrial Strategy The NRC supports the Government of Canada’s Defence Industrial Strategy by advancing research and innovation in areas such as transportation, quantum science, medical countermeasures and advanced manufacturing. The Role We are seeking a Structural Engineer for the Real Property Planning and Management Branch. The successful candidate will share NRC’s core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity. As a key member of our engineering and construction team, you will provide structural design solutions for NRC’s research facilities, including accommodation, construction and renovation projects. You'll also support operations and maintenance as needed. The projects range from office fit‑ups and renovations to new construction, involving all construction trades and disciplines such as civil, structural, architectural, mechanical and electrical. Project values vary from tens of thousands to millions of dollars. As a fast‑paced workplace, strong communication skills are essential. You must work effectively with contractors, consultants, clients and other NRC stakeholders. Screening Criteria – Education Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering with a structural option from an accredited university. Membership in a provincial engineering association (e.g., Skilled Engineers Ontario or Ordre des Ingénieurs du Québec) is desirable. Screening Criteria – Experience Significant and recent experience in designing and analysing structural systems for institutional, commercial and industrial facilities, including steel, concrete, masonry, timber and foundations. Experience with seismic design, load‑bearing systems, and rehabilitation or retrofit projects. Preparation of tender and construction drawings using AutoCAD, NMS specifications and associated cost estimates. Interaction with internal and external stakeholders across multiple disciplines. Management of multiple concurrent projects. Minimum of five (5) years of experience; recent experience defined as within the last two (2) years. Condition of Employment Reliability Status is required. Verification of background information over a five‑year period is necessary. Language Requirements Bilingual Imperative BBB/BBB. Assessment Criteria – Technical Competencies Solid knowledge of design practices and selection of materials and equipment for structural systems. Knowledge of applicable regulatory requirements, codes, standards and guidelines. Experience with general documentation, tendering and contract award practices. Ability to produce structural drawings in AutoCAD for tendering and construction. Strong knowledge of project management principles. The incumbent who meets language requirements receives a bilingualism bonus of $800 per year.
