As the Senior Manager of Systems Design, you will perform people‑management activities to meet the demands of projects, bids, and products assigned to your team. Your responsibilities include ensuring the team meets departmental objectives—quality, budget, and schedule targets—and contributing to strategic decision making across the organisation.Key Responsibilities
Technical
Review estimates for bids and proposals prepared by team members. Monitor system and signalling design progress on projects/products and take action when required to ensure the team has the resources needed for success. Mentor and guide the team to ensure a clear plan and strategy for delivering high‑quality designs.Proactively monitor team progress and take actions to resolve issues in a timely manner. Identify development risks and create/implement mitigation plans. Maintain strong working relationships with other managers in Software, Hardware, Safety, and ITV groups. Evaluate workload to ensure the team has the resources and skills to complete development, escalating concerns to system management and ensuring corrective actions are closed timely and completely.Ensure Hitachi Rail development processes are followed and support the delivery of safe, high‑quality systems. Promote a safety culture where product safety is paramount. Ensure safety is built into the design through early identification and resolution of safety‑related defects. Management
Assign team members to projects and tasks to meet resource needs for all projects and products. Develop team members through training, coaching, and mentoring. Execute change management initiatives for discipline improvements. Conduct regular performance/objective reviews and yearly salary reviews for all team members.Provide coaching and mentoring to work package managers (WPMs) and ensure timely completion of project deliverables. Plan staffing, hiring, and training to meet current and future departmental commitments. Develop proposals and estimate costs, deadlines, and risks for bids. Drive the professional development of teams—including competencies, skills, and career progression.Deploy processes, methods, tools, and policies while respecting corporate and organisational guidelines. Supervise contractors and other specialists, defining their work, coaching preparation, and directing priorities. Identify and implement process improvement initiatives. Align design strategy with other organisational initiatives to maximise consistency and re‑use.Provide a professional, dynamic, cooperative, and high‑achieving work environment. Required Skills and Experience
Technical background in systems engineering and overall development of safety‑critical systems. Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Systems, Electrical, Computer), Computer Science, or a closely related field. 10–20 years of experience in development of software‑based system applications. Knowledge of modern software engineering practices, methods, and tools.Knowledge of the systems development life cycle. Expertise in URS (Urban Rail Signaling) systems or an equivalent industry (minimum 2 years). Strong planning and organisational skills. Excellent technical writing, communication, and presentation skills. Experience preparing KPIs to track development progress.Experience preparing development schedules and budgets. Experience in change management. Leadership to drive a team through change. Experience in process analysis to drive quality and efficiency improvements. Preferred Skills and Experience
Minimum of 5 years managing a group of technical resources. Experience using DOORS, Polarion, Melody Advance, or other system design and requirement management tools. Strong application domain knowledge of automated train control systems and systems engineering principles. Knowledge of rail signalling.Compensation and Benefits
Salary range: $185,000– $210,000, based on experience. Comprehensive benefits include: Health, dental, and vision plans – 100% of premiums company‑paid. Retirement savings plan with company contribution and match, no vesting period.
