What is the Opportunity? As part of an alliance agreement, Aecon has been awarded a contract in an Aecon‑led partnership with Kiewit Nuclear Canada by Ontario Power Generation (OPG) for the execution phase on the Darlington New Nuclear Project (DNNP) in Clarington, Ontario. Beginning in 2025 Aecon will support the Construction of the Unit 1 Small Modular Reactor at the Darlington site.
What You’ll Do Here:
Supervise all site welding activities in field and fabrication shop settings
Assist welding Engineers in developing, troubleshooting, designing, testing and training with various types of welding processes and pieces of equipment
Be able to perform welding activities with manual, mechanized and automated solutions to develop welding processes and complete welding PQR efforts according to CWB and ASME code standards
Assist with the Aecon Nuclear welding school activities and classes (theoretical and hands on)
Oversee the day‑to‑day operations within the DNNP site
Manage welding equipment, cranes, certifications, inspections, consumables stock, PPE, and other pertinent aspects required to operate day to day operations of the DNNP site
Oversee all welding‑related activities and personnel within the DNNP Site
Support managing welder qualification testing and training programs
Lead the development and completion of Procedure Qualification Records (PQRs), Welding Procedure Specifications (WPSs), and other procedural welding documentation
Coordinate process qualification and mock‑up welding activities
Conduct research and development (R&D) initiatives related to welding and manufacturing
Perform testing and analysis of welding coupons, including cutting, bending, and macro inspections
Supervise modifications, maintenance, and minor construction of welding machinery
Deliver welding theory and hands‑on training to support development of site welders
What You Bring to the Team:
Certificate of Qualification for arc welding
Ability to manually weld to high volumetric RT/UT standards with GTAW, SMAW, SAW, FCAW and/or GMAW welding processes
Minimum 10 years of industry welding experience with manual and/or mechanized welding arc processes
Able to read and work off blueprints and fabrication drawings as well as understand Weld Symbols
Takes pride in work to strive for excellence and instill this mindset to others
Have a willingness to mentor other welders and trainees
Practices a strong safety culture
Must have a positive attitude to develop and test new solutions to solve a variety of technical welding issues
Must have experience with hand tools, grinders, etc.
Upon request, Welding Applicants may be required to perform a preliminary weld test prior to employment to demonstrate their talent
Familiar with welding principles is preferred. (Basics of arc welding, types of welding etc.)
Familiar with robotics or comparable semi‑automated and mechanized machinery is an asset
Strong problem solving and trouble‑shooting skills
Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills
Strong written and oral communication skills
Strong mechanical aptitude to be able to work on and maintain basic welding equipment
Knowledge to develop weld related tooling and equipment is an asset
Knowledge to operate mechanized and robotic equipment is an asset
