Senior Rail Construction Manager– Greater Toronto Area HDR is seeking a Senior Rail Construction Manager to join our Transportation – Construction Services team. The role reports to the group lead and is responsible for leading the delivery of freight rail projects during construction, overseeing HDR’s scope of services including Construction Project Management, Owner’s Representative, and Construction Observation.

Responsibilities

Promote and oversee implementation of health and safety regulations.

Provide Construction Project Management and oversight during construction.

Administer the construction phase of a project, including budgeting and scheduling.

Manage a multi‑discipline design team to produce high quality deliverables, meet schedules and stay within project budgets.

Provide oversight and be responsible for projects and for the work of multiple teams.

Be responsible for the successful delivery of projects, including oversight of risks and issues.

Apply thorough and consistent methodology/approach to project deliverables and quality of submissions.

Build strong working relationships with the client and ensure the project team continues to deliver high quality work.

Ensure all project deliverables are complete and compliant with the client’s quality requirements and checklists.

Manage day‑to‑day activities of the project team and subconsultants.

Represent HDR at meetings, presentations and address issues raised by the client.

Respond to the client in a timely manner.

Mentor project management and junior staff on a project.

Report on project performance to HDR’s senior management.

Manage project risks and mitigate those risks in a timely fashion to minimize impact on project performance.

Incorporate lessons learned into the project.

Engage in business development and proposal activities.

Travel to projects across the province and eastern Canada for extended periods of time.

Other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or related field.

Proven analytical, communication, and negotiation skills.

Knowledge and ability to utilize required computer software such as MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Experience with MS Project or Primavera (P6) considered a strong asset.

Sound knowledge of OPS specifications and standard drawings, TAC standards, Metrolinx and AREMA design standards.

Knowledge and skill in interpreting and applying transportation construction practices, procedures and quality assurance techniques.

Demonstrated knowledge of relevant laws and regulations (Environmental, Health and Safety, etc.) and their application in construction contracts.

Ability to interpret construction critical‑path schedules.

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, and write reports and correspondence independently.

Ability to organize, prioritize and schedule work.

Ability to analyze and solve problems.

Proven leadership and demonstration of leadership abilities.

Valid Ontario driver’s license with an acceptable driving record and access to a reliable vehicle.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management, Construction Science or closely related field or equivalent work experience.

A minimum of 10 years of experience in various aspects of construction planning and management, including construction contracts, document, time, cost and quality management, change management, estimating, bidding, purchase order administration, scheduling, and cost control.

Experience with Microsoft Office.

Experience with construction management software such as Procore, Prolog, Primavera, Bluebeam, etc.

Strong people skills and ability to interact with the owner, engineer, contractor and other project stakeholders.

Benefits and Compensation Compensation range: $147,000– $197,000 (Burlington, ON). Includes medical, dental, vision, short‑ and long‑term disability, life insurance, employee assistance program, paid time away, parental leave, paid holidays, a retirement savings plan with employer match, employee referral bonus and tuition reimbursement.
