Overview Our Parks, Recreation and Culture department is seeking a motivated individual for the role of Recreation Leader 1 in Youth Recreation Services. Typical duties include providing customer service; preparing and leading program plans for youth; assisting the supervisor to schedule indoor and outdoor activities; resolving conflicts and situations involving patrons; promoting interest and participation in program activities and events; enforcing departmental policies and procedures; and ensuring required standards of behavior, safety and security are maintained. This position involves records keeping and preparation of reports related to activities and inventory, creating signs and promotional information, and assisting in the training and direction of staff and volunteers. Performs related work as required.

Responsibilities

Provide customer service and assistance to program participants and patrons.

Prepare and lead program plans for youth; assist in scheduling indoor and outdoor activities.

Resolve conflicts and situations involving patrons; promote interest and participation in programs and events.

Enforce departmental policies and procedures; maintain standards of behavior, safety and security.

Maintain records and prepare reports related to activities and inventory.

Create signs and promotional information; assist in training and directing staff and volunteers.

Perform related work as required.

Qualifications

Completion of a two-year Community Recreation program from a recognized Community College and preferably related experience, or completion of Grade 12 supplemented by courses in recreation and related community recreation experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Strong communication skills and ability to build and maintain working relationships; ability to organize and promote programs for various groups.

Experience working with youth who identify as part of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community or other marginalized groups is preferred.

Ability to recruit and train auxiliary staff and contract instructors; recruit, train, direct and evaluate volunteers.

Knowledge of recreational and social interests and activities (e.g., summer services, sports, arts); knowledge of local youth resources and ability to connect youth to resources as needed.

Valid First Aid Certificate and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certificate– Level C are required.

Class 4 Unrestricted Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia is considered an asset.

Note: Police Information Check may be required.

Salary Salary: $29.48– 30.70 – 31.97 – 33.25 – 34.63/hour (Pay Grade 15) (2024 Rates)

$31.52– 32.88 – 34.25 – 35.61 – 37.09/hour (Pay Grade 15) (2026 Rates)

Schedule 48 hours bi-weekly (0.68 FTE); Monday 5:00 PM– 9:00 PM; Tuesday 2:30 PM – 9:00 PM; Wednesday–Thursday 5:00 PM – 9:00 PM; Friday 2:30 PM – 9:00 PM.
