Senior Electrical Engineer Location: Burnaby, British Columbia (Hybrid) We are hiring a Senior Electrical Engineer on behalf of our client. They’re expanding their team so you can work with an industry leader. Our client is one of the largest electrical energy suppliers in Canada. Description We are seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to support the engineering and design of electric utility transmission substations. This role will focus on electrical design solutions for high‑voltage transmission station infrastructure and will contribute to engineering studies, standards development, technical specifications, and construction documentation. You will work within a multidisciplinary engineering environment that includes civil, electrical, mechanical, structural, and fire protection engineering teams. The role involves supporting substation design projects, evaluating major electrical equipment, and providing engineering oversight during procurement, construction, testing, and commissioning activities. This position requires demonstrated expertise in electrical engineering design within electric utility environments, particularly transmission substations operating from 12kV to 500kV. The successful candidate will also provide technical leadership, mentorship to junior engineers and engineers‑in‑training, and support project teams with engineering guidance and problem solving. Responsibilities - Perform engineering design and analysis for electrical utility transmission substations operating from 12kV to 500kV. - Analyze and resolve engineering problems related to electrical system design, equipment selection, and substation infrastructure. - Develop engineering specifications, technical standards, and construction documentation for substation projects. - Support procurement processes through technical evaluation and specification of major electrical equipment. - Manage small to medium sized engineering projects or work packages, including scope definition, scheduling, and cost estimation. - Review design work produced by internal project teams, consultants, and contractors to ensure compliance with engineering standards and accepted practices. - Provide engineering oversight and technical support during construction, installation, testing, and commissioning of electrical equipment. - Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including civil, structural, mechanical, and protection and control engineering disciplines. - Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior engineers and engineers‑in‑training. - Maintain effective professional relationships with internal teams, contractors, and stakeholders to ensure project objectives are achieved. - Participate in engineering studies and technical reviews related to power system planning, system operation, and substation design improvements. Qualifications - 8 years of experience in electrical engineering supporting large‑scale utility infrastructure or electrical transmission projects within power utility, transmission, or substation design environments. - Demonstrated experience in electrical design of transmission utility substations operating from 12kV to 500kV. - Strong knowledge of major electrical equipment including transformers, capacitors, reactors, disconnect switches, and circuit breakers. - Familiarity with advanced power technologies such as FACTS devices including SVC and STATCOM, as well as energy storage technologies such as BESS and hydrogen systems. - Knowledge of the electrical, mechanical, civil, and protection and control requirements associated with substation infrastructure. - Understanding of power system planning, system operation, protection and control engineering, and engineering project management. - Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with the ability to investigate and resolve complex engineering issues. - Ability to manage design tasks including scope, schedule, and cost while ensuring project quality and compliance. - Solid communication skills including technical writing, presentations, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams. - Experience reviewing engineering deliverables prepared by consultants or contractors. - Knowledge of national and international electrical standards such as CSA, ULC, IEEE, and IEC is considered an asset. - Experience with design software used for grounding studies, lightning studies, and bus design is considered an asset. - Experience with CAD and 3D modeling tools such as AutoCAD, Inventor, and Vault is considered an asset. Education and Skills - Degree in Electrical Engineering, preferably with a focus on power engineering. - P. Eng and will be required to Provide Proof of Permit to Practice, registered with EGBC when hired. - Strong technical writing, analytical, and presentation skills. - Demonstrated leadership capability and ability to mentor junior engineers and technical staff.
