Our client is a dominant, well-established player in the retail manufacturing space — the largest in their category — and is seeking a Financial Controller to lead accounting operations, financial reporting, internal controls, and compliance.
Responsibilities
Financial Operations & Reporting Leadership
- Direct the full-cycle production of periodic financial statements, ensuring strict adherence to ASPE
- Deliver accurate, decision-ready financial intelligence to senior executives and ownership on predictable timelines
- Govern the general ledger with rigorous oversight of transaction integrity, classification accuracy, and data reliability
- Drive the monthly and annual close cycles, enforcing disciplined deadlines and quality standards throughout
Strategic Planning & Performance Analytics
- Own the corporate budgeting cycle and rolling forecast processes end-to-end
- Translate financial variances into actionable narrative — diagnosing root causes, flagging risks, and recommending course corrections
- Build financial models and scenario analyses that equip leadership to evaluate opportunities and trade-offs with confidence
Governance, Controls & Risk Oversight
- Architect and sustain a robust internal control environment designed to protect organizational assets
- Conduct risk evaluations and shepherd internal and external audit programs from planning through resolution
- Institutionalize transparent policies, documented procedures, and evidence trails across all financial workflows
- Direct insurance portfolios and financial risk mitigation strategies
Liquidity Management & Banking Relationships
- Oversee cash positioning, liquidity forecasting, and working capital optimization
- Steward banking partnerships, credit arrangements, and capital facility negotiations
- Supervise transactional finance functions including payables, receivables, and payroll administration
Regulatory Compliance, Tax & External Relations
- Maintain full compliance posture across federal and provincial tax obligations, including corporate tax, GST/HST, and payroll remittances
- Serve as primary liaison with external tax specialists and audit firms, managing filings, examinations, and advisory engagements
- Proactively track evolving accounting pronouncements, tax code changes, and regulatory developments; assess implications and lead organizational response
Cost & Inventory Stewardship
- Collaborate with operations leadership to ensure precise inventory valuation and accurate cost-of-goods-sold reporting
- Maintain inventory control frameworks across distributed locations or fulfillment networks
- Bridge operational activity and financial outcomes through integrated reporting and reconciled data
Technology, Process & Scalability
- Continuously assess and refine financial infrastructure, workflows, and control mechanisms to support growth and efficiency
- Champion or co-lead ERP deployments, system enhancements, and automation initiatives that modernize the finance function
Qualifications:
- CPA
- 6+ years of experience within Manufacturing, Retail, or Distribution
- ERP implementation is an asset
