Fair Haven Homes Society is a non-profit organization which was founded over 60 years ago to provide low-cost housing for seniors. Today, Fair Haven provides long term care and affordable housing to more than 500 seniors in Burnaby and Vancouver. Fair Haven is recognized as a leader in long term care and services for seniors. We are recruiting casual Recreation Workers for our Burnaby & Vancouver care homes who have experience in organizing and delivering therapeutic recreational programs. Key Duties/Responsibilities: - Carries out programs such as arts and crafts, sports, games, cooking, gardening, social-cultural events and social outings, both inside and outside the facility by selecting appropriate activities, confirming details of proposed activity with supervisor, and communicating activities to residents, their families and staff. - Contacts external agencies for program resources as required. - Sets up and organizes furnishings and equipment for programs, teaches the techniques of related activities to residents. - Accompanies residents on outings and coordinates porting during activities to provide residents with opportunities for physical and functional mobility according to established procedures. - Records attendance of all programs. - Makes posters and timetables and keeps residents informed of upcoming events. - Reports relevant observations of residents’ progress and behaviour by communicating concerns and/or changes of residents’ condition to the supervisor and/or inter-disciplinary team members. - Reviews goals of residents on a regular basis and provides suggestions for change or modifications to existing programs as appropriate. - Operates the facility bus for community outings, ensures a pre-trip inspection and safety check on the vehicle. - Attends to residents’ personal care needs at community outings and programs. - Provides work direction to volunteers and demonstrates related techniques as required. - Participates in the orientation of recent residents, staff and volunteers as needed. - Maintains inventory of equipment, tools and materials and reports malfunctioning equipment and supply needs to the supervisor. - Maintains a clean, safe work environment by practicing good housekeeping habits such as putting away materials after use, wiping spills, keeping floors free of debris, and keeping potentially hazardous equipment away from unsupervised residents. - Promotes resident safety practice by following guidelines, policies and procedures. - Attends a variety of meetings such as care conference, staff committee, in-service and workshop as required. - Contributes and maintains a safe environment for residents, families and staff by: - a. Following resident safety-related policies, procedures and guidelines; - b. Maintaining knowledge of emergency procedures; - c. Using infection control best practices and procedures; - d. Using skills and physical facilities, supplies and equipment safely and appropriately; - e. Identifying and reporting any potential or actual resident or staff safety concern in a timely manner - Performs other related duties as required. Qualifications: - Grade 12, completion of recognized recreational courses plus two years’ recent, related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience - Must possess a valid FoodSafe 1 Certificate - Must possess a valid Occupational First Aid (OFA1) Certificate If interested, please send your cover letter and resume to Human Resources, indicating “Recreation Worker” in the subject line.
