Description
Overview Automation Validation Team Lead at LMI Technologies leads the Automation Validation (AV) team and related projects. The AV and Validation teams work on new production automation equipment design, product validation, process engineering, and overall systems engineering. You will be part of a multidisciplinary team that collaborates with every department to ensure our products are designed and manufactured to the highest standard. This role is part of the global Technology (R&D;) team and reports to the Senior Product Engineering Manager at the Burnaby head office, with oversight of Automation Designers/Engineers in the AV team. Responsibilities Establishes standards and guidelines for the Automation Validation team, regularly reviewed and approved by the group manager. Make strategic decisions about automation processes based on inputs from multiple departments. Work with the sensor design team to roll out current product introductions, validate product features, and integrate into existing or new automation infrastructure. Carries out regular design reviews with the team and across departments. Produce task lists to break down project assignments into an appropriate level of detail. Create and oversee standard processes for product validation based on existing ISO and Worksafe BC standards. Employ a scientific and data-driven approach to verify and validate equipment designs, both individually and with the team. Lead Lean-Six-Sigma principles and best practices to improve product quality and standardize designs and manufacturing processes. Design, develop, and optimize micron-level automation equipment for optical manufacturing processes (e.g., alignment and calibration). Identify and implement continuous improvement initiatives. Produce efficient documentation for knowledge transfer across groups (design validation, assembly, commissioning, maintenance). Interpret technical data to effectively design and support mechatronic systems. Lead commissioning of new automation equipment or production jigs. Train team members and participate in performance evaluations. Maintain day-to-day communication with the team across inter-company teams and functions. Qualifications Degree or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or Electrical/Controls Engineering. 5–10 years of related experience, with a focus on mechanical design and automation/controls. Experience leading a team and driving goals and milestones. Strong leadership and ability to manage engineering staff. Strong fundamentals in data analysis with the ability to produce meaningful conclusions. Strong knowledge of SolidWorks, EPDM, and mechanical design principles, particularly CNC-based precision part design. Familiarity with electrical and wiring diagrams for automation equipment. Familiarity with basic hand and machine shop tools. Good working knowledge of motion control systems. Strong understanding of metrology in applications. Strong understanding of machine vision tools/algorithms (asset). Strong understanding of ASME Y14.5 GD&T; or ISO GPS Standard. Lean process and development experience is an asset. Lean and/or Six Sigma Black Belt is an asset. Self-driven and proactive, able to search and retrieve information to support development activities. Proficiency in clear verbal and written communication. Experience with design of experiments and application of scientific methods. Problem solving with a clear understanding of facts and defined test plans and solution strategies. Strong interpersonal skills for effective teamwork across departments. Strong knowledge of Google Workspace or other Office productivity software. Knowledge of Python or other coding is an asset. Experience presenting project ideas and business cases with accompanying analysis is an asset. Familiarity with optical systems such as lenses, cameras, or filters is an asset.
