Build Calgary's essential infrastructure across multiple engineering teams. The City of Calgary is hiring engineers across multiple business units, with opportunities spanning planning, design, project development, and delivery of critical public infrastructure. Qualified applicants may be considered for different engineering disciplines and areas of practice based on business needs and organizational priorities. As a Project Engineer (Process), you will be responsible for managing the engineering, design, administration, contract preparation, tendering, construction, project management and quality control of capital infrastructure projects or programs at the water treatment plants, distribution network and within the division, including new water treatment plant and raw water intake. You will also prepare business plans, capital budgets, and provide engineering oversight of new facilities and improvements to existing facilities. Primary duties include: - Select engineering consultants, architects and contractors for the design and construction of new facilities and/or retrofit or replacement of existing facilities. - Provide accountability and oversight of consultant assignments, equipment procurement, supply and construction contracts ensuring all contractual, legal and regulatory requirements are met. - Conduct comprehensive review and validation of engineering design, contract drawings and specifications, and oversee construction and commissioning. - Manage scope, schedule, budget, risks, and performance indicators, and develop mitigation strategies to address risks. - Manage several complex projects and programs simultaneously and accept overall responsibility. - Identify any contentious items and possible methods of resolution; liaise with external and internal parties and facilitate decision-making, collaboration and adherence to quality, safety and contractual requirements. - Report on progress, contract management and delivery of projects in compliance with the City's standards, APEGA requirements, safety legislation, and applicable codes and regulations. - Assist in developing strategic plans for the team, establishing priorities, delivering corporate initiatives, leading change, and promoting innovation. Learn more about each business unit: Water Services protects public health and the environment by supplying safe drinking water and managing stormwater, wastewater collection, and treatment for Calgary and neighbouring communities. This highly regulated work includes operating treatment facilities, maintaining extensive pipe networks, and responding to service issues such as water outages, sewer backups, and water quality concerns. Utilities Delivery is responsible for the detailed design, construction, and handover of capital projects across water, wastewater, stormwater, and waste services. The work focuses on safe, efficient delivery of complex infrastructure, supporting engineers who thrive in execution, coordination, and bringing projects from design through commissioning. Project Development identifies and develops projects that improve the places and services Calgarians experience. Engineers in this business unit focus on early-stage work such as needs assessment, option analysis, and project definition, working closely with internal teams and interested parties to set projects up for successful delivery. Capital Planning and Business Services supports how City projects are planned, governed, and tracked. The team ensures capital investment planning, asset management, and project management practices are applied consistently across Infrastructure Services to support sound decision-making and accountability. Climate & Environment leads the City's work on climate mitigation and adaptation, environmental policy, sustainability programs, and protection of Calgary's natural systems. This business unit supports data-driven decision-making and long-term resilience by balancing environmental stewardship with the needs of a growing city. Qualifications - A degree in Mechanical, Civil, or Environmental Engineering or a related Engineering field. - You must have at least 0-3 years (for level P2E), 4-7 years (for level P3E), or at least 8 years (for level P4E) of relevant professional engineering experience obtained after receiving your P. Eng. designation and a current licensure as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) complete with practicing status OR licensure and practicing status by the first day of work. Click here for more details. - Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered. - Relevant experience in engineering roles related to planning, design, analysis, project development, project delivery, operations, or asset management. - Experience applicable to municipal utility infrastructure including water, wastewater, and stormwater systems, within public or private sector environments will be considered an asset. - Demonstrated ability to apply engineering principles in practical, real-world settings, which may include infrastructure planning, capital project work, regulatory environments, consulting, construction, or operational contexts is preferred. - Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams and interested parties. Working Conditions: Office environment with some positions conducting field visits and site inspections. Pre-employment Requirements - A security clearance will be conducted for some positions. - Applicants will be tested for appropriate skills for some positions. - Must obtain a City of Calgary operator's permit for some positions. - All successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.
