Geotechnical Project Engineer (P.Eng) In‑House Practice Location Calgary, Alberta Full‑Time | Hybrid (minimum 3 days per week in office) Reports To Principal About the Role Cornerstone is seeking a Geotechnical Project Engineer (P.Eng.) to help establish and grow our in‑house geotechnical engineering practice. This is a key foundational hire as we intentionally integrate geotechnical and structural engineering under one roof to deliver better project outcomes, reduce risk, and improve efficiency for our clients. The successful candidate will take a hands‑on, end‑to‑end role across the full spectrum of geotechnical work — from field investigations through reporting, construction support, and client coordination. As a full‑time geotechnical engineer, this role requires sound technical judgment, professional accountability, and comfort working in a lean, developing practice environment. This position offers the prospect to work closely with structural engineers on building projects, allowing for earlier collaboration, improved foundation solutions, and reduced risk associated with late‑stage design changes. Key Responsibilities Lead and manage geotechnical investigations, including: - Planning subsurface investigation programs - Coordinating drilling and test pit contractors - Field logging and site sampling Analyze subsurface conditions and develop: - Foundation recommendations - Bearing capacity and settlement analyses - Earthworks and site grading recommendations - Slope stability, excavation support, and shoring concepts where required Prepare, author, and professionally stamp geotechnical engineering reports Provide geotechnical input throughout project design in close collaboration with internal structural engineers Support construction activities including: - Review and interpretation of compaction testing and laboratory results - Construction monitoring and field reviews - Responding to contractor and client inquiries Interface directly with clients, contractors, municipalities, and other consultants Oversee and interpret laboratory testing results; assist with the development and operation of basic in‑house testing capabilities as required Contribute to internal quality control processes, documentation standards, and geotechnical practice development Professional Responsibility & Oversight The Geotechnical Project Engineer will author and stamp their own work and act as Engineer of Record in accordance with APEGA requirements. Work will receive independent technical review by an external Senior Geotechnical Engineer as part of Cornerstone’s quality management process. This review is intended to support technical rigor and risk management while preserving the Project Engineer’s professional judgment and accountability. All work will be issued under the firm’s Permit to Practice and aligned with APEGA’s Code of Ethics and professional practice standards. Qualifications Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registered with APEGA – non‑negotiable Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering with a focus on geotechnical engineering Minimum 5 years of geotechnical engineering experience, including at least 2 years of Alberta experience Strong working knowledge of Canadian and Alberta geotechnical practice standards Experience across both field and office environments Comfortable performing a wide range of tasks required in a growing, integrated engineering practice Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to local project sites Software & Technical Tools Experience with common geotechnical analysis and reporting tools is an asset, such as: - GeoStudio (e.g., SLOPE/W) - LPILE / GROUP or similar - Settle3 or equivalent - Excel‑based engineering calculations We are flexible and open to adopting the software tools the successful candidate is most proficient with.
