Major Duties Our Nuclear Services team lives at the intersection of advanced engineering, real‑world problem solving, and some of the most complex environments in industry. We don’t just design tooling and hand it off—we follow it through its entire lifecycle, from early development to on‑site execution inside operating nuclear facilities, and then back again to make it better the next time around.
What makes this team unique is the depth of ownership we have over our work. Team members are involved in designing, commissioning, deploying, troubleshooting, and improving specialized nuclear tooling used for inspection, maintenance, and refurbishment. That means the lessons you learn on site don’t get lost, they directly shape the next generation of tools and processes.
This is a team for people who enjoy hands‑on technical challenges, thrive in dynamic environments, and want to see the tangible impact of their work. Our work is highly collaborative. Nuclear Services acts as the bridge between engineering, operations, and our nuclear customers, providing trusted expertise when it matters most. Because nuclear projects are often outage‑based and time‑critical, our team plays a key role in ensuring tooling is reliable, well‑maintained, and ready to perform when the window is tight.
As a Mechanical Design Engineer you will design, analyze, and oversee the creation and implementation of mechanical systems and components; ensuring compliance with standards, collaborating with various stakeholders, and maintaining documentation and safety protocols.
Specific Responsibilities
Perform engineering calculations for machine and tool designs, including strength, speed, horsepower, temperature, pressure, and force.
Analyze engineering drawings and specifications to determine shape, dimensions, and hardness for equipment, processes, and products.
Assess the feasibility of using multiple machines for sequential operations.
Create working and detail drawings, and bills of materials using AutoCAD and SolidWorks.
Ensure designs comply with applicable standards (e.g., OSHA, CE).
Review drawings for accuracy, material selection, machining techniques, finishes, and hardness.
Liaise with customers, in‑house technical staff, and vendors for technical information and specifications.
Communicate design changes and task progress to the Manager, Mechanical Engineering, and supervising designer.
Formalize and update drawing documentation.
Create drawings of existing tooling using precision measuring devices.
Supervise mechanical design efforts on a project level, delegating tasks to team members.
Organize project documentation, including quotes, drawing registers, correspondence, requisitions, drawings, and schedules.
Communicate time estimates and resource requirements for design tasks to the Manager, Mechanical Engineering, and Project Manager.
Review electrical requirements with electrical designers and machine operations with programmers.
Assist fabricators, machinists, toolmakers and electricians in debugging, integration, and system completion.
Determine tools, fixtures and equipment for fabrication and assembly of mechanical components.
Select and requisition appropriate purchased components for mechanical assemblies.
Examine project instructions and drawings to determine test specifications, procedures, objectives, and test equipment.
Oversee co‑op students and Junior Designers on various projects.
Adhere to ISO procedures and ensure compliance with the ATS Code of Business Conduct.
Qualifications Education
A post‑secondary diploma or degree in mechanical design, mechanical engineering or equivalent.
Experience
A minimum of 5 years of mechanical design experience.
Proficient in AutoCAD and SolidWorks.
Strong knowledge of drafting principles.
Experience in designing tooling from sketches or verbal concepts.
Understanding of pneumatics, hydraulics and electrical devices.
Effective communication and teamwork skills.
Analytical skills for engineering calculations and design analysis.
Attention to detail for reviewing drawings and documentation.
Familiarity with ISO procedures and quality standards.
