Description
Job Summary The Process Safety Engineer develops, implements, and maintains Process Safety Management (PSM) programs to ensure the safe design, operation, and modification of processes handling hazardous materials. The role focuses on regulatory compliance, risk reduction, and continuous improvement through hazard analyses, management of change activities, mechanical integrity oversight, and alignment with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). Key Responsibilities - Facilitate process hazard analysis (PHA), hazard operability studies (HAZOP), what‑if/checklist, and failure mode and effects analysis (FEMA); identify worst‑case scenarios and recommend safeguards. - Support asset integrity and reliability by working with engineering to ensure critical equipment (pressure vessels, piping, relief systems, controls) is designed, inspected, tested, and maintained per appropriate codes and standards. - Define inspection intervals and acceptance criteria; analyze equipment failures and near‑misses. - Manage the change program: review changes to equipment, chemicals, operating conditions, procedures, or software and ensure safety impacts are assessed before implementation. - Conduct pre‑startup safety reviews and pre‑qualification walk‑downs, reviewing process safety information and managing action items. - Develop, review, and maintain operating procedures, safe work practices, and permit systems for hot work, confined space, and line breaking. - Investigate incidents, near‑misses, and abnormal events; perform root cause analysis and recommend corrective and preventive actions. - Maintain compliance with regulations and recommended practices using Risk Based Process Safety (RBPS); prepare for inspections and audits, and maintain required documentation. - Promote a process safety culture through training, communication, and reinforcement of safety policies and procedures. Qualifications - Education: Bachelor of Science in Engineering (chemical, mechanical, or related); PEng preferred. - Experience: 2+ years facilitating and leading PHA/HAZOP; 5+ years applying process safety principles and risk assessment techniques. - Minimum 2 years working in a GMP environment; experience with hazard identification and risk assessment methods. - Strong understanding of thermodynamics, reactions, fluid flow, and hazardous properties of chemicals (including dust hazards). - Proficiency in PHA software and related tools preferred. - Demonstrated ability to lead a team; solid documentation skills; ability to work independently with minimal supervision. - Excellent collaboration skills across operations, maintenance, and management functions.
