Educator, Kindergarten - Hundred Acre Wood (HAW) About HAW Hundred Acre Wood is a non-profit forest school with two locations in Grey County, Ontario. Our beautiful sites offer wild spaces and natural learning environments for children aged 18 months to 11 years. We provide two licensed childcare centers, forest immersion summer camps, and a unique, alternative educational program for primary grades, all designed to nurture whole child development. The Role The Kindergarten educator will support the delivery of a child-led, play-based, and nature-focused program that aligns with HAW’s philosophy and meets Ontario’s early years regulatory requirements. This role focuses on fostering foundational skills through exploration, play, and meaningful outdoor experiences, while supporting children’s development in a nurturing and responsive environment. This educator position is based in the Kindergarten program, however it may include occasional work in other programs or the kitchen. As an educator, you will deliver a program that is emergent, nature-based, and meets the requirements of the regulatory bodies overseeing Early Years Childhood Education in Ontario. Responsibilities Program Delivery & Learning Facilitation: - Set up engaging learning environments that invite play-based and nature-based learning. - Deliver an emergent, inquiry-based program inspired by children’s interests, the natural setting, and seasonal changes. - Support the development of early literacy, numeracy, communication, and problem-solving skills through play. - Follow daily routines while remaining responsive and flexible to children’s needs and interests. - Collaborate with colleagues to ensure consistency and quality in program delivery. Child Development & Care: - Care for and connect with each child, supporting their daily needs including toileting, dressing, eating, and self-expression. - Build strong, responsive relationships that foster a sense of belonging, well-being, and emotional security. - Observe and respond to individual developmental needs, supporting each child’s growth across all domains. Health, Safety & Compliance: - Oversee the health, safety, and well-being of all program participants at all times. - Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements, including those set by the Ministry of Education (CCEYA) and Public Health. - Maintain a clean, safe, and organized learning environment both indoors and outdoors. Family & Team Communication: - Communicate professionally and regularly with parents and families regarding the day-to-day care and experiences of their child(ren). - Foster positive relationships with families built on trust, transparency, and respect. - Work collabo ratively with team members, supporting a positive and cohesive work environment. Outdoor Learning & Daily Operations: - Arrive prepared to work outdoors daily in all weather conditions with appropriate clothing and gear. - Perform a variety of tasks including administrative duties, gardening, cleaning, shoveling, snow removal, general property care, and cooking when required. - Provide support for forest immersion summer camps and seasonal programming as required. - Support overall program operations, including occasional assistance in other program areas or the kitc hen. Qualifications Education: - Diploma or degree in Early Childhood Education (RECE, OCT or equivalent designation preferred). Additional training in outdoor education, forest school, or play-based learning is considered an asset. Experience: - Experience working with kindergarten-aged children in a childcare or educational setting. - Experience with play-based, emergent curriculum approaches. - Experience in outdoor or nature-based settings is an asset. Skills: - Strong observation and child engagement skills. - Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities. - Ability to balance structure and flexibility in a dynamic environment. - Strong organizational and time management skills.
