R.J. Burnside&Associates Limited (Burnside) is seeking an Intermediate Inspector/Contract Administrator to join our Bridges&Culverts Group. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 3 years of experience in civil construction, contract administration, and client relationship management. We are seeking applicants who are interested in working out of our Guelph, Orangeville or Collingwood offices.
As a key member of our Bridges&Culverts team, you will work on a variety of municipal projects, including structure rehabilitations, bridge and culvert replacements, retaining wall construction and municipal roadway and infrastructure reconstruction projects. You will play an integral role in project coordination and monitoring, ensuring the projects progress in accordance with contract requirements.
What You’ll Do You’ll be part of a collaborative civil engineering team supporting the design and construction of municipal bridge and culvert infrastructure projects. This role blends technical design, contract administration, and field involvement.
Key Responsibilities Include
Review and comment on constructability of design drawings and contract documents
Prepare tender packages, technical specifications, special provisions, and forms of tender
Provide contract administration services, including chairing construction meetings, reviewing progress claims, change requests, and issuing payment certificates
Reviewing, assessing and negotiating contractor change requests
Conduct site inspections (periodic and full-time), prepare inspection reports, and ensure construction conforms to design drawings and specifications
Undertake preliminary and detailed design for bridge and culvert rehabilitation and replacement projects
Liaise/coordinate with other disciplines/departments in preparation of reports, design packages, and proposals for multi-disciplinary projects
Prepare technical memoranda, quantity take-offs, and cost estimates
Responding to public enquiries and liaison with municipal and agency staff
Coordinate with contractors, and internal multi-disciplinary teams
Review as-built documentation and provide project close-out support
Work independently and collaboratively while engaging in professional development and industry events
What You Bring We’re looking for someone who is detail-oriented, organized, and comfortable working both in the field and in a technical office environment.
You’ll Succeed If You Have
A diploma or degree in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Management, or a related discipline
3–7 years of experience in civil construction, including inspection, contract administration, and client interaction
Strong understanding of construction processes, contract documents, and design drawings
Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Microsoft Project)
Experience using AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and Bluebeam and/or Adobe Acrobat
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including technical report writing
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
Knowledge of applicable Canadian codes, construction materials, and occupational health and safety requirements
A valid driver’s license and ability to travel to project sites, with flexibility to work evenings or weekends when required
It’s a Bonus If You Also Have
Experience with bridge and culvert rehabilitation and replacement infrastructure projects
Experience working on multi-disciplinary municipal infrastructure projects
Strong problem-solving skills and confidence working independently on remote project sites
Salary Range $80,000 - $100,000 (final compensation offered will be based on factors such as relevant experience, skills, internal equity, and market conditions.)
