Position Overview
Mechanical Designer, Product Design and Development (Marine Acoustics)– Department: Engineering – Location: Collingwood, ON – Reports To: Engineering Leadership – Employment Type: Full‑time Permanent, On‑site role – Salary Range: $110,000.00 – $140,000.00 This new role of Mechanical Designer will focus on product design and development for marine acoustic products and subassemblies. The position owns the mechanical product design intent and execution across concept, prototyping, verification support, production release, and sustained engineering. It works closely with mechanical, acoustic, electronics engineers, manufacturing, and quality to deliver hardware that is manufacturable, serviceable, and aligned to real customer use cases. The role is product‑focused and is expected to produce buildable designs and disciplined drawing packages, lead design‑for‑manufacturing discussions, and drive practical outcomes.Responsibilities
Product Design and Development
Own mechanical design for marine acoustic products and subassemblies, including housings, mounts, sealing concepts, cable routing and strain relief, protective features, and assembly concepts. Translate customer and operator use cases into practical mechanical requirements and design features. Create and maintain three‑dimensional CAD models and two‑dimensional manufacturing drawings in SolidWorks.Lead trade studies and design decisions that consider manufacturability, reliability, handling, installation, service access, and cost. Tolerancing and Design Control
Apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and perform tolerance stack‑ups for critical interfaces and assemblies. Maintain disciplined revision control, drawing standards, and engineering change documentation. Develop and maintain interface control documentation where multiple subsystems meet. Manufacturing Readiness and Sustained Engineering
Lead design‑for‑manufacturing reviews with production, quality, and manufacturing partners. Specify and refine fixtures, jigs, and tooling concepts to improve repeatability and reduce assembly time. Support build issues through root cause investigation and design updates, including corrective actions andchange implementation.Contribute to work instructions and inspection criteria in partnership with Quality. Cross‑functional Collaboration
Work with acoustic and electronics engineering to ensure packaging, interfaces, and integration meet system constraints. Partner with the Advanced Manufacturing Specialist on fixture strategy, prototype builds, machining approaches, and additive manufacturing options. Communicate design intent clearly to technicians and stakeholders through drawings, models, and practical walkthroughs.Collaboration
Partner with the Marine Acoustic Product Design Lead and Mechanical Design Engineer to translate design intent into robust, manufacturable solutions. Collaborate with Quality to define inspection methods, gauge selection, and acceptance criteria. Key Outcomes
Production‑ready designs that balance performance, reliability, usability, cost, and schedule. Clear, complete drawing packages that reduce shop‑floor ambiguity. Faster prototype iteration cycles enabled by strong fixture and tooling concepts. Improved assembly repeatability and serviceability throughthoughtful design choices.Qualifications
5+ years in mechanical product design and development with demonstrated release to production. Advanced SolidWorks capability, including complex assemblies, configurations, and production drawings. Strong working knowledge of GD&T and tolerance analysis. Proven experience collaborating with production teams and resolving design issues in real builds. Strong documentation discipline and ability to deliver clear, buildable drawing packages. Explicit communicator with a practical, team‑first working style. Highly Valued Assets
Experience with ruggedized electromechanical products or harsh‑environment hardware (marine preferred). Familiarity with sealing, corrosion control, cable management, strain relief, shock and vibration considerations, and serviceability design. Experience designing fixtures and tooling that materially improve assembly repeatability.Comfort using additive manufacturing and hybrid fabrication approaches during prototyping and tooling development. Experience working within quality‑managed environments where traceability and documentation matter. Benefits
Competitive compensation Comprehensive paid time off including vacation and personal days Health, dental, and wellness benefits to support well‑being Ongoing learning and development opportunities to help grow the career Exposure to innovative, cutting‑edge acoustic technology A people‑first culture that values collaboration, support, and inclusionEngaging company events and team activities that make work enjoyable Sensor Technology is committed to a diverse and inclusive workplace.
