Mechanical Engineer-in-Training (Production Engineering) (Delta)
Description
Carmela Industries is the parent company for Summit Valve and Controls (est. 1992), Special Alloy Fabricators (est. 1989), and Custom Energized Air (est. 1999). We operate behind the scenes, providing strategic guidance and corporate services (accounting, HR, marketing, and IT) to each company. Additionally, we hold all patents for the SlurryFlo Control Valve and Oreacle Knife Gate Valve technologies. Carmela Industries is a privately owned enterprise, and proud to be Canadian. Company Overview Special Alloy Fabricators Ltd. (SAF) is a 100% Canadian-owned company specializing in the design, engineering, and manufacturing of high-performance valves and flow equipment. Founded in 1989, SAF operates a fabrication facility in Delta, British Columbia, and maintains sales and engineering in Edmonton, Alberta. At SAF, we pride ourselves on our in-house engineering expertise. Our team of professional engineers is dedicated to creating custom-engineered products that incorporate patented features, specialized materials, and robust designs. We utilize advanced CAD, CFD, and FEA software to develop products that thrive in challenging environments. The industry sectors cover oilsands mining, oil and gas and mining operations around the world. We have a global presence with our solutions and enjoy working on challenging projects in many applications. Our product portfolio includes: - SlurryFlo Control Valves: Featuring patented trim technology to protect against erosion in abrasive flow conditions. - Oreacle Isolation Valves: Engineered with unibody fabrication and high-performance materials for durability in challenging environments. - RocketPlates: Custom-engineered restriction orifice plates designed for extreme resistance to erosion. - ArmaSpool: Specialized pipe spools designed to protect downstream piping from abrasive flow. - GREY49: Custom manufactured valves for light industrial and municipal application requiring exotic alloys and custom dimensions. SAF has a permit to practice engineering in Alberta (under APEGA) and permitted in BC (under EGBC). We are licensed under the CSA-B51 quality program and adhere to all relevant regulations and standards, including ASME B16.34 and, ensuring the highest quality and safety in our products. Position Summary This role is ideal for a recent engineering graduate or an early-career professional with a background in mechanical engineering. You will work closely with senior engineers and the manufacturing shop team to fully develop a manufacturing package, starting from initial design to finished product assembly and testing. There is occasional travel to customer sites, vendors, meetings and conferences within Canada, or international locations such as Latin America, Australia, US, and others. To promote synergy with the team in Alberta, there is occasional travel to Edmonton, AB. Engineering Function SAF Engineering consists of six distinct functional groups that collaborate closely to meet both the technical and commercial needs of the organization. These groups include: 1. Applications & Business Development 2. Production & Post Sales Support 3. Product Development & Research 4. Engineering Management 5. Technical Quality Control (QC) & Compliance 6. Sourcing (Supply Chain & Planning) The successful candidate will start with Group 2 (Production & Post Sales Support) to complete their first station of a rotational plan, with movement through other groups in the following years. This rotational approach offers a broad spectrum of training opportunities, allowing the engineer-in-training to gain valuable exposure to SAF’s internal production and external supply chain network. The candidate will operate under different reporting structures in each group, supporting their development across various engineering disciplines and workflows within SAF. Key Responsibilities - Assist in creating production designs of custom flow control equipment (e.g., valves). This process involves understanding the custom solution concepts developed for customers and using SAF and engineering practices and modeling tools (i.e. SolidWorks) to bring the design concept to life. - Create 3D and 2D packages of the products to manufacture the parts. This entails understanding of manufacturing processes, as well as raw material and fabrication practices, with a robust ability to use modeling tools. - Collaborate closely with the manufacturing shop team and vendors to understand and resolve manufacturing challenges and limitations, evolving the designs accordingly. - Work with third party drafting services to produce clear and accurate drawing packages. - Participate in design meetings with senior engineers to evaluate design features and engineer new manufacturing and design concepts. - Conduct applicable code reviews and determine design specifications using internal documentation and applicable industry codes such as ASME B16.34, ASME Section VIII. - Build knowledge of fluid mechanics, process piping, and flow equipment design. - Work with customers to provide product after sale field support. - Support factory acceptance testing and other project specific technical literature such as instruction manuals and engineered lifting solutions to satisfy technical requirements of production equipment. Experience and Education Qualifications - Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution. - Registered or eligible for registration as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) in Alberta. - 0–2 years of related engineering experience (co-op and internship experience considered). - Previous use of ERP systems or CRM platforms in a technical sales or engineering context considered an asset. - Working knowledge of SolidWorks 3D CAD tools and familiar with 2D manufacturing drawings. Preferred Qualifications - Advanced degree such a Masters (MSc or MEng) - Completion of relevant co-op placements or internships in mechanical design, application engineering, or valve/flow control systems. - Familiarity with control valve sizing standards (ISA S75.01, ISA S75.02) and ASME pressure piping and valve codes. - Familiar with valve instrumentation, automation, communication protocols and dynamic testing. - Experience or coursework in fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, or process piping design. - Exposure to or proficiency with CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) or flow simulation software. Skills & Abilities - Robust critical thinking skills with the ability to assess complex technical data and make sound engineering judgments. - Proven ability to analyze problems systematically, identify root causes, and develop effective and innovative solutions. - Comfortable working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, managing multiple priorities while maintaining high attention to detail. - Proactive and resourceful—able to navigate ambiguity, seek out information, and make progress independently. - Demonstrated self-motivation and a commitment to continuous learning and professional development. - Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to present technical information clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences. - Effective time management and organizational skills to meet deadlines and support cross-functional teams. - Enthusiastic about engaging with clients and internal stakeholders, with an interest in the intersection of engineering and business development. Working Conditions - Physical Requirements – Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Also working in the shop for the manufacturing review purposes which requires some lifting, moving and measuring. - Environment – Office environment, manufacturing shop environment with the expectation to travel internationally as required - Hours of operation: 7 am – 3:30 pm (PST) Health & Safety Expectations - Review and demonstrate understanding of all company Health & Safety Policies - Actively participate in Hazard Reporting - Attend regular meetings - Participate in audit(s) - Complete Field/Site Assessments (as applicable) Compensation to include salary, incentive programs, benefits and a deferred-profit-sharing plan.
