Description
Location North Campus, Edmonton. In-person location. Position Summary Supports the execution and advancement of pilot-scale thermochemical reforming research focused on the valorisation of agricultural, forestry, and municipal solid waste into hydrogen-rich syngas. The role operates within the framework of externally funded research projects, institutional safety and operational protocols, and collaborative research partnerships. Key responsibilities include contributing to the commissioning and operation of a pilot-scale thermo-catalytic reforming (TCR) unit, assisting in experimental planning, execution, data analysis, troubleshooting, and preparing process documentation such as P&IDs;, SOPs, and technical manuals. The position collaborates with graduate students and provides technical guidance on experiments, thesis development, and manuscript preparation. Additional responsibilities involve research proposal development, conference participation, procurement support, and maintaining communication with international collaborators. Through these tasks, the position plays a critical role in ensuring successful commissioning, operation, and scientific output of the pilot-scale facility, strengthening the organization’s research capacity, external collaborations, and impact in sustainable waste-to-energy technologies. Responsibilities - Pilot-Scale System Commissioning and Operation – Support the commissioning, start-up, and operation of the pilot-scale thermo-catalytic reforming unit. - Experimental Design, Execution, and Data Analysis – Develop experimental plans, conduct runs, monitor process variables, ensure data integrity, and interpret results. - Process Documentation and Technical Development – Prepare and update PFDs, P&IDs;, SOPs, safety documentation, and operational manuals. - Supervision and Training of Graduate Researchers – Assist MSc and PhD students in planning, troubleshooting, data interpretation, thesis development, and manuscript preparation. - Collaboration, Stakeholder Engagement, and Project Coordination – Participate in technical meetings, coordinate with teams, maintain communication with international collaborators, and support reporting. - Research Dissemination, Proposal Development, and Procurement Support – Contribute to proposal writing, conference presentations, and manage procurement of equipment. Qualifications - Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering or closely related discipline, specializing in biomass pyrolysis, thermochemical conversion, or catalytic processes. - Technical and Specialized Knowledge - Advanced knowledge of biomass pyrolysis, thermo-catalytic reforming, and waste-to-energy conversion at laboratory and pilot scales. - Minimum of 2 years experience working on a pilot-scale TCR unit. - Deep understanding of operating parameters and their influence on product yields. - Practical knowledge of reactor systems, process commissioning, steady-state operation, and scale-up considerations. - Analytical and Experimental Skills - Proficiency in analytical techniques such as TAN, GC-MS, TGA, FT-IR, BET, XRD, EDX, and SEM. - Ability to interpret complex datasets and evaluate reaction kinetics, catalyst performance, and material properties. - Solid experimental planning and data validation skills. - Conceptual and Problem-Solving Abilities - Integrate chemical engineering fundamentals with mechanical and materials engineering concepts. - Strong troubleshooting skills in lab and pilot systems. - Define research objectives aligned with funded project goals. - Communication, Supervision, and Collaboration Skills - Scientific writing and editing for manuscripts, thesis, conference presentations, and peer-review responses. - Interpersonal collaboration with internal teams and external partners. - Prepare technical and funding agency reports for TCR initiatives. Benefits This position offers a comprehensive benefits package with an annual salary range of $65,369 - $74,880. The terms and conditions of this appointment are governed by Schedule E of the Collective Agreement between the Board of Governors of the University of Alberta and the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta.
