Thurber has an exciting opportunity for an experienced
Construction Materials Field Technician , with three (3) or more years of direct experience, to join our team in
Edmonton, Alberta
for the 2026 construction season, with possible opportunities beyond. Thurber provides geotechnical, environmental and construction materials engineering and testing services for a variety of industries across Canada. Our multidisciplinary expertise allows us to work on problems related to earth, the environment and construction materials. We solve problems in a wide variety of industries including transportation, building construction, municipal infrastructure, land development, dams and water resources, industrial development, mining, oil and gas, marine and environmental services.This posting is to fill existing vacancies for two (2) positions at this level of experience in our Edmonton location. The role supports larger complex industrial and infrastructure projects which are predominantly out of town in northern and central Alberta. Responsibilities
Provide construction inspection and quality control/assurance testing for various infrastructure and transportation projects. Conduct field compaction testing of soils. Carry out construction inspection for various projects. Carry out field concrete testing as per CCIL/CSA requirements. Conduct pile construction monitoring for driven steel and cast‑in‑place concrete piles.Laboratory testing of field materials. Ensure all work conforms to CCIL, ASTM and other company and industry standards. Effectively communicate results and observations to clients, contractors and project engineers verbally and in written formats. Liaise with project engineers and client’s site representatives.Travel to local and remote construction sites. Qualifications and Assets
Three (3) or more years of field-based work experience carrying out construction monitoring and field materials testing. Completion of a related post‑secondary diploma level program in Engineering Technology is an asset, but not required. Strong organizational, interpersonal and English spoken and written communication skills.Concrete Testing Certificate from CCIL/CSA is required. Must be available to work variable shifts based on construction schedules which include weekends and extended work hours. Must possess a valid Class 5 driver license. Must be able to lift and carry 25 kg at chest height to handle samples and equipment.Additional Information
This position would appeal to those who thrive in a field-based environment and enjoy working out of town. Many sites require pre‑access and post‑incident drug and alcohol testing. Applicants will be required to provide a 3‑year driver abstract and a 3‑year insurance claims experience letter.Criminal Names Record Check will be required for operators of Nuclear Densometers for compaction testing.
