As a Horizontal Directional Drill Operator for Polar Communications, you will work alongside our underground crew to install, repair and replace underground telecommunications lines. Experienced in operating the equipment in a safe and appropriate manner, the HDD Operator must have experience in underground telecommunications cable placement. This role will also include labor, locating, site assessments, and helping out team when needed. (Please note, this job posting is for our Edmonton location)Essential Functions
Operate HDD in a safe and professional manner. Use both hand tools and power tools to assist in both directional drilling and the placement of conduit underground. Inspect and maintain vehicles and equipment in good working condition at all times and complete all required documentation. Perform daily preventative maintenance when required.DigiTrak Falcon F2 and RD line locator knowledge/experience is an asset. Follow company safety standards, policies and procedures at all times. Aspire to work in a team environment with increased responsibility being expected. Other duties as required. Additional tasks may be assigned as required.Qualifications
MUST provide a driver’s abstract and confirm current insurance, as well as a minimum of 3-years with continuous insurance with no claims or convictions on record. Minimum class 5 license. Must be ok with working out of town with possible overnight stays. Some jobs may be out of province. This job often requires overtime hours. The successful candidate should be ok with a flexible schedule and have an ability to work with different people and tasks.Safety certifications preferred (e.g. First Aid/CPR, WHMIS, C.S.T.S, H2S Alive, Confined Space, OSSA and Ground Disturbance). Grade 12 or GED. Skills and Abilities
2+ years HDD experience required. Hydrovac operator experience an asset. Experience locating shallow utilities. Knowledge of ground disturbance procedures. COR experience is an asset. Must be comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions year round. Ability to complete medical assessment, fit testing and correctly use and wear a fit-tested½ mask respirator.Ability to continuously wear and effectively use mandatory PPE (CSA approved steel toed boots, hi-vis vest, hard hat). Ability to wear and effectively use task specific PPE (cut resistant gloves, CSA approved safety glasses with side shields). Hand tool experience (IE Drills, saws, jackhammers, ECT) an asset.6 months experience operating trucks and trailers preferred. Must be able to lift up to 40lbs.
