Our current business segments include: - Black Earth –Agriproducts division focused on the production and development of agricultural products centered on the unique properties of our world class Humalite resource. - WestMET ERS – Branching from a coal mining background in Alberta, the WestMET Earth and Reclamation Services (ERS) Team aims to provide engineering, environmental and regulatory support to mine sites as well as other industrial proponents. Currently, WestMET ERS is working with multiple Alberta coal mines on their path through reclamation and closure as well as ongoing compliance monitoring and reporting. WestMET strives to push the standard of reclamation forward by finding innovative solutions to achieve both regulatory compliance and equivalent land capability targets. Position Summary The Junior Environmental Scientist will be focused on supporting a variety of tasks including projects related to mine site reclamation, field assessments, field sampling programs, and reporting. Other duties may include vegetation assessments, soil assessments, wildlife monitoring program support, surface water sampling, groundwater sampling, data entry, organization of data and other land and desktop based environmental and regulatory tasks. The ideal candidate would be located along the Highway 16 corridor between Hinton and Edmonton. This position does not currently have formal direct supervisory responsibilities over other employees. Essential Duties and Responsibilities - Support reclamation monitoring and field programs, under the direction of qualified staff. - Participate in post-field analysis and reporting by organizing data, drafting notes, and contributing to report summaries. - Assist in the completion of soil and vegetation assessments. - Water (surface and groundwater) sampling. Training to be provided as required. - Support project managers, including developing work plans and project scheduling. - Complete safety program requirements for all field activities. Education and Experience - Degree or diploma in environmental science, biology or related field. - This is an entry level position; previous work experience would be considered an asset. - Solid soils and vegetation skills are key for this role. - Experience with field programs, data management & analysis, and report writing, would be considered an asset. - Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities. Licenses, Registration, and Certifications - In-training designation with an applicable organization such as Alberta Society of Professional Biologist (ASPB) or Alberta Institute of Agrologists (AIA) would be considered an asset. - Safety certification is also an asset, but training will also be provided, as required. - Class 5 Drivers License. - Leadership. - Communication. - Decision making. - High regard for safety. - Comfortable in the field and working near heavy equipment. - Experience operating light duty trucks, ATV/UTV, ARGO and trailers. Location - Flexible including work from home as well as at various sites throughout Alberta. - Edmonton and Hanna, Alberta (main office centers). - A mix of desktop and field activities. Occasional evening or weekend work, as required.
