Job Summary The Journeyperson Carpenter is responsible for contributing to the development of highly energy efficient homes crafted with sustainable materials. The role requires proficiency in reading blueprints, measuring accurately, and using a range of hand and power tools to shape and assemble wood and other materials. The Carpenter works both independently and as part of a team, ensuring projects are completed safely, efficiently, and with high-quality craftsmanship. This position reports directly to the Site Supervisor. The position requires flexibility to travel and work at various construction sites throughout British Columbia, often with extended shifts and overtime.
Key Responsibilities
Construct and install structures and fixtures (frameworks, partitions, joists, studs, rafters, stairways, doors, windows, cabinets).
Measure and mark cutting lines using rulers, chalk, and marking tools.
Shape or cut materials to specifications using hand tools, machines, or power saws.
Assemble and fasten materials using screws, nails, dowel pins, or glue.
Install joists, trusses, and rafters.
Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and building plans.
Take precise measurements and calculate dimensions required for projects.
Select appropriate materials based on project requirements.
Inspect and replace damaged frameworks or structures.
Ensure accuracy, quality, and craftsmanship of carpentry work.
Follow established safety rules and maintain a safe, clean environment.
Use PPE and ensure tools/machinery are in safe condition.
Safely operate hand tools and construction equipment.
Collaborate with electricians, plumbers, and other trades.
Provide mentorship to apprentices and junior carpenters.
Support continuous improvement and collaborate with Site Supervisor on quality control processes.
Select and source appropriate materials considering durability, strength, and budget.
Estimate material requirements and manage supplies to minimize waste.
Skills&Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent.
Completion of an apprenticeship program or formal carpentry training.
Crane operator experience/certification is an asset.
3–5 years of carpentry experience with a portfolio of completed projects.
Proficient in use of hand tools, power tools, and carpentry machinery.
Strong understanding of carpentry techniques, materials, and construction drawings.
Excellent problem‑solving skills, attention to detail, and communication.
Physical stamina, hand‑eye coordination, and ability to follow instructions.
Journeyman Carpenter certification/licensure may be required depending on regional regulations.
Safety certification preferred.
Work Environment
Work performed primarily on construction sites, often in loud, dusty, or hazardous conditions.
May require working at heights, in confined spaces, or in various weather conditions.
Shifts are typically 10–12 hours, with overtime expected.
Compensation&Benefits
$34.50– $42.50 per hour (based on experience).
