Description
Senior Architectural Designer / Technical DrafterAutoCAD + Revit | Residential Permit & Construction Documentation Robert Designs Inc. is a growing interior design and BCIN design firm based in Kingston, Ontario. We specialize in elevated residential design, permit-ready architectural documentation, renovations, additions, new builds, basement conversions, and interior-focused architectural design. We are looking for an experienced Senior Architectural Designer / Technical Drafter to join our team and help lead the production of accurate, permit-ready and construction-ready drawing packages. This role is ideal for someone who is highly proficient in both AutoCAD and Revit, understands residential construction, and can move projects from design concept through technical documentation with confidence and accuracy. This is a key role within our firm. We are looking for someone who can help improve project delivery, reduce production bottlenecks, support junior/interior-focused team members, and allow the company to grow more profitably while maintaining a high standard of design and documentation. The Role The successful candidate will be responsible for preparing and coordinating residential architectural drawing packages, permit drawings, construction documentation, technical details, revisions, and drawing updates. You should be comfortable working independently, reviewing existing conditions, interpreting design direction, applying Ontario Building Code requirements, and producing drawings that are clear, coordinated, and suitable for submission, pricing, and construction. This role requires both technical drafting strength and design sensitivity. Our projects often involve high-end residential interiors, additions, renovations, secondary suites, custom homes, and detailed millwork/interior architectural coordination. The ideal candidate understands how to balance design intent with practical construction documentation. Key Responsibilities - Prepare permit-ready and construction-ready drawings for residential renovations, additions, new builds, basement conversions, and interior architectural projects. - Produce accurate floor plans, reflected ceiling plans, elevations, building sections, wall sections, details, schedules, and general notes. - Work fluently in AutoCAD and Revit, with the ability to adapt between platforms depending on project requirements. - Review and coordinate drawings for accuracy, constructability, dimensions, code compliance, and completeness. - Assist with Ontario Building Code annotations and Part 9 residential compliance coordination. - Support responses to municipal building department comments and permit review revisions. - Translate design concepts into coordinated technical drawing packages. - Coordinate interior design elements with architectural documentation, including kitchens, millwork, fireplaces, built-ins, lighting layouts, and finish coordination. - Review existing site measurements, photos, sketches, and client information to develop accurate existing and proposed drawings. - Work with the principal designer and internal team to keep projects moving efficiently. - Mentor or support less technical design team members where required. - Maintain drawing standards, file organization, title blocks, layers, details, and internal documentation systems. - Assist with improving production workflows between AutoCAD, Revit, SketchUp, and other design tools. Required Qualifications - Strong proficiency in AutoCAD is required. - Strong proficiency in Revit is required. - Experience preparing residential permit drawings and construction documentation. - Strong understanding of wood-frame residential construction. - Familiarity with the Ontario Building Code, especially Part 9 residential requirements. - Ability to produce clean, accurate, well-organized drawing sets. - Ability to work independently and solve technical drawing issues without constant oversight. - Strong understanding of dimensions, wall assemblies, stairs, guards, sections, roof forms, structural coordination, and construction detailing. - Ability to review drawings critically before submission. - Strong communication skills and ability to coordinate with designers, clients, contractors, consultants, and municipal reviewers. - High attention to detail and strong follow-through. Preferred Qualifications - BCIN qualification is a strong asset. - Experience with residential additions, secondary suites, basement conversions, and custom homes. - Experience with interior architectural detailing, kitchen/millwork documentation, and high-end residential design. - SketchUp, Enscape, Lumion, or rendering experience is an asset. - Experience responding to city permit comments is an asset. - Experience working in a small design firm or fast-paced studio environment is an asset. - Familiarity with Ontario municipal permit processes is an asset. Who This Role Is For This position is best suited for someone who enjoys technical production, problem solving, and taking ownership of drawing packages. You should be the type of person who can receive design direction, ask the right questions, organize the drawings, identify missing information, and move the project forward. We are not looking for someone who only wants to produce early design concepts. We need someone who can help close the gap between design ideas and completed technical documentation. Ideal Candidate You are likely a strong fit if you: - Can take a project from schematic design into a coordinated permit/construction drawing set. - Are confident in both AutoCAD and Revit. - Understand how residential buildings are actually constructed. - Can identify drawing issues before they become site or permit problems. - Are comfortable working with both design-focused and technical project requirements. - Enjoy creating systems, improving workflows, and helping a growing firm become more efficient. - Can support the principal designer by reducing technical bottlenecks rather than adding to them. Compensation Compensation will be based on experience, technical ability, software proficiency, BCIN qualifications, and overall fit. Full time, part-time, or contract arrangements may be considered for the right candidate. How to Apply Please submit your resume, portfolio, and examples of technical drawing work. Applicants should include examples of residential permit drawings, construction drawings, Revit work, AutoCAD work, or other documentation that demonstrates technical drafting ability. Applicants who can demonstrate experience with Ontario residential permit drawings and construction documentation will be prioritized.
