The problem we’re solving
Canada’s language learning system for newcomers is breaking down. Funding for English and French programs is being cut across the country, and access is shrinking, especially for refugees. Without strong English or French, refugees cannot fully rebuild their lives in Canada. They struggle to find work, navigate daily life, and integrate into their communities.
What Haven is doing about it
We’re building the best way for refugees to learn English in Canada (and French, soon). Haven is a registered Canadian charity that connects refugees with Canadians through a technology platform and a structured language program.
The Haven Language Program combines:
- Classes with teachers (you)
- Conversation practice with Canadian volunteers
- Personalized homework and self-study
This model is designed to be practical, scalable, and focused on real outcomes—helping refugees reach the language level they need to become independent in Canada.
The role
We’re looking for ESL teachers across Canada who want to do meaningful, high-impact work. You won’t just be teaching English—you’ll be helping someone start a new life in Canada. You’ll work with adult learners (CLB 1–8) in 1:1 lessons and small groups (maximum 4 students at the same level).
Classes are online, with a focus on: Speaking and listening, Real-life communication (employment, daily life, integration), and CLB-aligned progression.
Who we’re looking for
We’re looking for teachers who take their craft seriously and want to be among the best in the field.
Our ideal candidate:
- Has 3–5+ years of ESL teaching experience (Canada or internationally)
- Has strong English communication skills
- Is comfortable teaching adults in an online setting
- Is reliable, proactive, and organized
- Wants to contribute ideas to improve teaching and curriculum
- Is available for at least 10 teaching hours per week, ideally more
Strong assets (not required):
- Experience with CLB framework
- Experience teaching lower-level learners (CLB 1–4)
- Fluency in high-demand languages (e.g., Arabic, Ukrainian, Dari, Pashto, Farsi, Russian)
Schedule
We offer flexible scheduling based on student needs. Our highest demand times are
- Weekday evenings (Canada time zones)
- Weekends
We are especially looking for teachers available during these times.
Hours
Part-time: starts at ~10 hours/week
Opportunity to increase to 20–30 hours/week based on performance and availability
Compensation
Competitive hourly rates based on experience and qualifications (discussed during interviews).
This is a contractor role; hours are not guaranteed and depend on student demand and scheduling.
