Job Description POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY:
This role is responsible for preparing and serving nutritious meals as outlined on menus in accordance with applicable food service and safety regulations, while maintaining cleanliness and hygiene standards. The role contributes to the broader mission and values of The Salvation Army, upholding standards of service that reflect its spiritual and social commitment to the community.
Accountabilities
Prepare meals in accordance with standardized recipes and specific dietary requirements or restrictions.
Follow safe food handling and food‑safe practices at all times during preparation and service.
Utilize a variety of cooking methods, such as boiling, steaming, roasting, baking, grilling, and frying, to produce menu items.
Rotate inventory properly and use food resources efficiently to minimize waste.
Ensure proper food storage, labeling, and sanitation procedures are followed at all times.
Maintain effective communication and cooperation with team members to ensure quality food production and service.
Comply with hazard communication procedures, including the safe use and storage of cleaning chemicals and identification of potential allergens.
Apply safe lifting and carrying techniques to prevent strain or injury.
Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of the kitchen, dining, and storage areas, including waste removal, in accordance with health and safety standards.
Demonstrate high standards of personal hygiene and participate in workplace inspections as required.
Provide coordination to co‑workers, students, or volunteers on food preparation and general kitchen maintenance when assigned and as directed, particularly in the absence of the supervisor.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Critical Relationship Management Internal: Ministry Unit leadership, kitchen staff External: Clients, vendors, volunteers
Managerial Responsibilities Reports directly to the Food Services Manager.
Financial and Materials Management
May be authorized to spend, disburse, or collect small amounts of cash.
Minor material responsibilities, e.g., proper use and safekeeping of purchased food, donations, tools and appliances, and various cleaning chemicals.
Working Conditions
Work environment is typically in a kitchen, dining, and storage areas.
This position requires standing for long periods of time; being able to carry lift/move up to 40 lbs and standing on hard surfaces for extended periods of time.
This position requires individuals to wear appropriate full and clean uniform, footwear and to keep hair clean, orderly and properly fixed.
The work environment is generally positive; however, the incumbent may occasionally interact with individuals displaying challenging behaviours.
Education and Experience Qualifications
Completion of high school diploma plus one year of post‑secondary education/training in culinary or related discipline.
Food Safe Level 1.
CPR First Aid (C) and Non‑Violent Crisis Intervention Certificate or willingness to obtain.
Experience and Knowledge Requirements
One year of prior related experience.
Knowledge and application of food safety standards and sanitation regulations.
Knowledge of various dietary needs and restrictions (gluten‑free, vegan, vegetarian, allergen‑free, etc.) and ability to prepare meals accordingly.
An alternative level or combination of education and experience may be acceptable.
Skills and Capabilities
Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
Acute attention to detail is essential for food preparation, cleaning, and safety protocols.
Strong oral communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work collaboratively in a team‑oriented environment and to adapt to changing circumstances in a fast‑paced kitchen environment.
Demonstrated patience, understanding, and professionalism in all interactions.
Ability to provide an original copy of a Background Check that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required, including Child Check (if appropriate).
Compensation The target hiring range for this position is $20.48 to $21.49 with a maximum of $22.50. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
