Position Description This position is responsible for supporting the underwriting team with underwriting commercial accounts, including but not limited to new business, quotes, endorsements, renewals, and claims underwriting review. The Junior Underwriter collaborates internally with all operating areas and assists Underwriters and Senior Underwriter with their broker partner outreach. As an Underwriter, their work will have a big impact on the profitability and growth of the organization.
Reports To This position reports to the Manager of Transportation.
Primary Responsibilities
Underwriting a wide range of small and large commercial accounts with a focus on developing new business, and meeting new business targets
Evaluate risks, determine coverage options, and provide competitive packages to close coverage gaps
When required, represent MSI and foster meaningful relationships with broker partners at industry events, broker visits and marketing events
Maintain the adhered timeline of timely renewal notices, underwrite renewal risks within established service windows.
Attain established renewal retention rates agreed upon with the Manager of Transportation
Utilize underwriting guidelines and company best practices to ensure compliance and profitability
Demonstrate the ability to follow through on guidance received from Underwriters and Senior Underwriters
Ensure service levels are being met with endorsements and other policy maintenance requests
Stay informed on industry trends, market conditions, and regulatory changes to maintain competitive advantage
Reviewing claims and inspection reports, making recommendations as required
Ensuring all workflows, procedures, underwriting guidelines and service standards are being adhered to
Prepare reports for the Manager of Transportation about Underwriting performance related to renewals and endorsement activity
Contribute as needed to educational content released by MSI for our stakeholders
Role Requirements
Strong understanding of underwriting processes and insurance products
Sound knowledge and understanding of underwriting discipline and pricing models
Strong willingness for self-improvement and learning new skills and underwriting technical knowledge
Working knowledge of other functional areas of the business (i.e., Claims, Risk Management, etc.)
Strong Customer Service skills and problem solving skills related to dealing with broker requests
Ability to resolve conflicts in a productive way while maintaining a good relationship with stakeholders
Excellent computer skills; MS Word, Excel
CIP designation or actively pursuing CIP
Receptive to and welcomes coaching
