The incumbent is responsible for cleaning, disinfecting, and sterilizing scientific equipment used in the laboratory to ensure a safe and effective work environment. The person sorts, washes, and inspects glassware and laboratory equipment, operates specialized equipment such as glassware washers and autoclaves, and ensures compliance with hygiene, safety, and quality protocols. They also participate in inventory management and equipment maintenance, maintain accurate records of sterilization operations, and work closely with laboratory teams to ensure the availability of clean and sterile equipment. The position requires attention to detail, organizational skills, independence, teamwork, and adherence to established procedures. JOB DESCRIPTION Cleaning and preparation of glassware: - Use glassware washers to clean and disinfect laboratory glassware such as beakers, vials, pipettes, and any other items as requested by the laboratories. - Manually clean delicate glassware or items not compatible with machines, as needed. - Inspect glassware for cracks, chips, or other defects and remove damaged items from circulation. - Maintain accurate records of sterilization cycles, equipment maintenance, and glassware usage. Sterilization of items using an autoclave: - Use autoclaves to sterilize laboratory equipment, glassware, and materials posing a biological risk, following sterilization protocols. - Monitor autoclave performance, resolve minor equipment issues, maintain accurate records, and report any malfunctions to maintenance staff or suppliers. - Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of the glassware washer and autoclave to ensure optimal operation. Inventory Management: - Organize and restock clean glassware and supplies in designated areas. - Maintain adequate inventory levels of cleaning products, detergents, and autoclave trays. - Notify the supervisor or the supply team in the event of a stockout. Waste Disposal and Safety Compliance: - Handle and dispose of chemical and biohazardous waste in accordance with safety and environmental protection regulations. - Comply with laboratory safety standards, including wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) and following standard operating procedures (SOPs). - Participate in regular safety training and help maintain a clean and safe work environment. REQUIREMENTS - Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. - Basic skills in equipment operation. - Ability to work effectively as part of a team. - Attention to detail and strict adherence to procedures. - Good organizational skills and ability to manage priorities. - Familiarity with laboratory safety and hygiene standards (a plus). - Experience with washing and sterilization equipment (a plus). WORKING CONDITIONS - Full-time position (36.25 hours per week). - Requires standing for long periods and lifting objects weighing up to 12–25 kilograms. - Exposure to heat, steam, and potentially hazardous materials when operating equipment. - Wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, lab coats, and safety goggles is required.
