On this page About the position Duties Responsibilities will include: Operating and maintaining equipment used in research and field activities. Assisting with the planning, field set-up, and seeding of various trials. Handling and applying chemicals throughout the season to control weeds, diseases, and insects. Harvesting trials in the fall using a combine. Supporting research assistants by taking field notes, assessing pest issues, and helping plan field activities. Assisting with sample collection, as well as organizing the shipping and receiving of samples. Intent of the process Immediate need: 1 full-time temporary position (duration of approximately 1 year).A pool of qualified and partially qualified candidates may be established and may be used to staff similar positions with various tenures. Possession of a valid pesticide applicator license. Ability and willingness to work overtime, including evenings and weekends. Ability and willingness to perform physically demanding work activities, including moderate to heavy manual labour. With appropriate safety precautions in place: Able and willing to work with hazardous materials. Ability and willingness to work in harsh environmental conditions (outdoors, cold, hot, dust, and noise). Ability and willingness to control allergies, through the use of personal protective equipment and/or medication and this most not impinge upon duties to be performed. Experience: Experience operating farm equipment, such as tractors, drills, sprayers, and combines. Experience planning and coordinating field operations. Experience handling and applying agricultural chemical products, such as fertilizers and pesticides. Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel. Experience with purchasing, shipping, and receiving. Applied / assessed at a later date Knowledge: Knowledge on Western Canadian crops and local farming practices. Knowledge on chemicals such as herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides. Knowledge of soil fertilizer and nitrogen management.
