Social Worker MSW, In-Patient Psychiatry

in Surrey, B.C.

Salary : CAD $42.27 - $52.81 per hour.

Job Summary : We are recruiting a Casual Social Worker (BSW) to join our In-Patient Psychiatry team. The role involves comprehensive social work and psychosocial assessments, discharge planning, community coordination, and multidisciplinary collaboration to provide optimal care for patients with acute mental illness and substance misuse.

Responsibilities

Conduct comprehensive social work and psycho‑social assessments of patients and families, utilizing interviews, social data gathering, and clinical modalities in line with professional standards.

Participate in care planning during hospital stay and community treatment after discharge, collaborating with the interdisciplinary team and arranging community services.

Communicate and collaborate with mental health and community agencies, family physicians, and other stakeholders to manage referrals and exchange critical information.

Serve as a resource to patients and families, providing community resource information, referrals, and support to strengthen family systems.

Educate and consult patients, families, and healthcare professionals on high‑risk factors, recovery, and current community practice.

Maintain accurate patient records, progress notes, and reports in accordance with policies and regulatory requirements.

Provide comprehensive therapeutic counseling and crisis interventions to patients and families.

Participate in program executive committees, evaluate services, identify improvement opportunities, and work toward efficient service delivery.

Collect, analyze, and report workload statistics and other data using approved software.

Develop, coordinate, and deliver in‑services, presentations, psycho‑educational workshops, and support groups for staff and clients.

Research and program planning to meet patient and community needs, including proposal writing and dissemination of findings.

Maintain current knowledge of social work practice and mental health fields through continuous professional development.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Master’s Degree in Social Work from an accredited school, with at least one year of recent experience in a mental health treatment setting.

Current full registration with the BC College of Social Workers.

Current Class 5 Driver’s License and access to a personal vehicle for business purposes.

Skills and Abilities

Comprehensive knowledge of emotional issues related to mental illness and addictions, and an understanding of cultural dynamics.

Effective referral‑making skills and strong collaboration with community agencies.

Counseling skills including crisis counseling, motivational interviewing, solution‑focused interventions, and group work.

Strong organization and priority setting in a complex environment.

Ability to educate patients, families, and professionals and provide consultation.

Leadership in care planning within the interdisciplinary team.

Ability to work effectively in a multicultural, independent, and team environment.

Mediation and negotiation skills.

Operational competence with software, hardware and virtual technologies.

Excellent verbal and written communication with patients, staff, and community partners.

Capacity to develop and deliver in‑services, presentations, and support groups.

Experience in research activities.

Physical ability to carry out job duties.

Applicants with a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) may be considered if they provide a clear outline showing how their background meets Master of Social Work equivalency.
