Description
FACP faculty members prepare students for success in a wide range of post-secondary programs, workplaces, and communities. They support and empower students towards growth and change. They contribute to the culture of the Faculty through energetic teaching, scholarship and institutional service. Faculty members must be committed to inclusivity and diversity, and they play a critical role in building the capacity of the Faculty.
Shortlisting will begin approximately 1 month prior to the start of each semester. This posting is for work that is temporary and dependent on enrolment and funding. Regular ongoing work will be posted separately.
Your cover letter must specify:
Preferred campus location: Cowichan, Nanaimo, or both
Educational qualifications: Bachelors, Masters, PhD, or other (minimum Masters degree in relevant discipline)
List of courses you are qualified to teach (minimum 24 credits in subject required)
Teaching experience
The Adult Basic Education (ABE) Department at VIU in Cowichan, Nanaimo, and potentially Powell River, may require instructors for Fall 2026, Spring 2027, and Intersession 2027 semesters.
Duties
Instruct course(s); prepare course materials; provide individual and group instruction; provide student support; design and implement student evaluation; grading and record keeping; liaise with Student Success Advisor; participate as an active member of the instructional faculty. Course delivery may be face-to-face, remote, or blended. Instructors need to be prepared to teach in any or all of these modalities.
English: integrate basic computer skills into instruction.
Sciences: set-up, take-down, facilitate learning, and supervise science labs in a safe manner; maintain and order lab materials and supplies.
ABE List of Courses In order to qualify to teach a subject, you must have 24 post-secondary credits in the subject area.
Courses are equivalent to the following BC grade levels: Grade 0 to 9 (Literacy); Grade 10 (03X); Grade 11 (04X); Grade 12 (06X). For a full list of course descriptions see the course descriptions website.

All courses follow the provincially articulated learning outcomes listed in the ABE Articulation Handbook.
Candidates must demonstrate commitment to teaching, learning, and student success. Successful candidates will participate in activities outside the classroom including student support and department committees.
Required Qualifications Master's degree in a relevant discipline from an appropriately accredited institution and relevant teaching experience. In order to teach in a subject area, applicants must provide transcripts demonstrating a minimum of 24 credits in the identified subject area. Recent experience teaching stated subjects and levels.
Demonstrated ability to prepare and deliver courses / lessons that incorporate a wide range of teaching strategies and address the needs of adult learners with various learning styles and abilities.
Experience teaching a variety of student success skills to adult learners, including active listening, critical thinking, personal management skills, study skills, test‑taking skills, and communication skills.
Demonstrated digital competencies and proven experience teaching with face‑to‑face, remote, and/or online delivery models.
Demonstrated problem solving skills, organizational skills, and time management skills.
Demonstrated commitment to life‑long learning.
Knowledge of, and the ability to access, institutional resources.
Familiarity with VIU's courses and programs. Responsive to diverse cultural and academic backgrounds of adult upgrading student populations.
Preferred Qualifications
Teacher training or certification.
