Description
Position Overview As part of an alliance agreement, Aecon has been awarded a contract in an Aecon-led partnership with Kiewit Nuclear Canada by Ontario Power Generation (OPG) for the execution phase on the Darlington New Nuclear Project (DNNP) in Clarington, Ontario. Beginning in 2025, Aecon will support the Construction of the Unit 1 Small Modular Reactor at the Darlington site.
Responsibilities
Preparing proposals for geotechnical investigations, instrumentation and monitoring, materials inspections and testing services.
Planning and overseeing geotechnical investigations from proposal phase to final submission for the geotechnical and foundation design report, including meetings and client correspondence.
Planning and overseeing geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring projects, including dewatering.
Directing field activities for instruments installation, such as inclinometers, surface monitoring points, pressure cells, strain gauges, multi-point borehole extensometer (MPBX), monitoring wells, vibrating wire piezometers and data loggers.
Carrying out site visits and trouble‑shooting geotechnical‑linked construction site issues;
Support the construction team to make initial trench slope stability assessments;
Supervise the work of geotechnical design subcontractors, in the field of dewatering, slope stability, drill and blast design, and excavation face stability;
Review design provided by geotechnical designers/;
Carry out excavation face mapping during the shafts and tunnel excavations;
Reviewing and interpreting monitoring information from geotechnical instrumentation programs.
Working independently with little supervision, and consulting with senior staff when dealing with complex matters and decisions.
Contribute to a culture of health, safety and protection of the environment by being a role model to junior and new staff to make safety a priority and contribute to the development of safety‑related documentation.
Developing an understanding of our client’s needs and delivering high‑quality service to ensure client satisfaction.
Work to build relationships with other staff around the company, through constructive engagement and collaboration.
Helping develop and participate in strong interoffice and intercompany teams to achieve project goals.
Works closely with the finance, quality, legal/risk, and project delivery shared services to advance project management tools such as project status reports, ensuring the design meets business line requirements and proper deployment and utilization within the business line.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
University graduate with a Civil Engineering degree specializing in Geotechnical or Geological, or currently registered as a P. Eng.
Registered MTO RAQS would be an asset.
7-10 years of experience and a strong background in geotechnical engineering and field investigations.
Good working knowledge of AutoCAD systems and current geotechnical software applications such as gINT Software and analytical software such as the GeoStudio suite (or similar) and FLAC (or PLAXIS or similar).
Experience with Hydroelectric Dams would be considered an asset.
Experience with complex geotechnical investigation and writing complete geotechnical foundation design reports.
Experience in geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring would be an asset.
Knowledge of environmental soil sampling, environmental testing and reporting would be an asset.
Excellent organizational ability, writing and verbal communication in English are essential.
Resourceful, decision maker, flexible, and positive.
Client-focused with business acumen.
Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills and can communicate effectively and proactively respond to time-sensitive issues.
Excellent computer and technical writing skills and the ability to work in a fast‑paced and multi‑tasked environment are essential.
Compensation Pay range: $120,000 - $150,000. Individual pay is determined based on several factors, including work location, education, experience, unique skills and job conditions. Other considerations may include certifications, specialized training, and the complexity or scope of the role.
