About The Position As a member of the Engineering Team, the Mechanical Design Engineer is involved with the development or improvement of products and designs. This may include creation of previously non-existent products or modification of existing products. Mechanical design engineers will possess the technical ability to evaluate project requirements, identify multiple solutions, and articulate design recommendations in a design review. They will in turn take the selected solution to a fully defined engineering package delivered to the operations team for production. They will also provide technical expertise to technicians and less experienced engineers.
Key Deliverables Reviews design requirements based on order specific assignment objectives, complex features, and possible solutions,
Troubleshoot design issues with respect to product application using sound engineering principles,
Modify existing designs by reviewing surveys, structures, and equipment.
Work with directly with customers, and outside engineering firms to design equipment to their specifications.
Ensure design packages are complete for manufacturing purposes.
Work with electrical controls group to ensure designs support current technology.
Ensure designs meet required design standards i.e CSA, UL, CE as applicable.
Adheres to established company policies and procedures paying special attention to safety regulations
Uses Astec Core Values to guide decisions, understand role to achieve strategic plan performance, budget performance, and schedule performance.
Work within expected company standards regarding ethics, safety, quality / ISO and environmental matters.
To be successful in this role, your experience and competencies are:
Bachelor’s Degree / diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Masters preferred
Minimum of three (3) years of experience as an engineer for a heavy construction or mining equipment manufacturer,
Experience working with engineering software programs such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Project Data Management (PDM) or any 3-D engineering software
Ability to climb equipment, etc. to inspect, troubleshoot, or gather design information.
Ability to work well with others and demonstrate valuable oral and written communication skills.

WORK ENVIRONMENT Manufacturing Environment Shop manufacturing environment exposures include exposure to moving mechanical parts, machinery, tools and equipment, vibration, fumes or airborne particles, motorized vehicles, welding and machining operations, outside weather conditions and exposure to the risk of electric shock. The employee may occasionally be exposed to varying levels of dirt, dust, toxic or caustic chemicals, very warm and/or very chilly temperatures. The noise level in the shop can be very loud at times consistent with an industrial assembly facility and may require hearing protection. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
