Description
Instrumentation and Control Engineer – Peterborough, ON BWXT Nuclear Energy Canada Inc. (BWXT NEC) supplies nuclear fuel and fuel channel components, services, equipment and parts for the CANDU® nuclear power industry. The Fuel Handling and Engineered Solutions group designs, manufactures, tests, supplies parts and services for on‑power refueling, reactor maintenance, and nuclear medicine tooling worldwide. Reporting to the Instrumentation & Controls Engineering Manager, the Engineer supports technical direction for projects, interfaces with internal and external customers, and provides engineering design, troubleshooting, maintenance, and support for fuel handling, tooling, medical isotope systems and remote delivery machines. Prepare/verify elementary drawings/schematics, electrical assembly drawings, single line diagrams, equipment specifications, and technical documents in compliance with applicable codes & standards. Liaise with personnel from various customer groups like design, operations, and maintenance to gather site‑specific design information. Execute walk‑downs of various equipment in the plant. Prepare and present technical data to internal and external customers. Ensure designs comply with applicable company, technical, and regulatory standards. Participate in design reviews and customer review meetings, providing stakeholder and design input. Test execution/commissioning of complex equipment and systems. Adhere to on‑time/on‑budget criteria associated with project commitments and customer success. Support the development and estimating of engineering proposals. Ensure that design supports the development and estimating of engineering proposals. Key success factors are engineering and product excellence, effective design activity management, task/milestone completion on‑time/on‑budget, producing defect‑free designs, meeting metrics, motivating a diverse team, managing and achieving results through influencing and setting of expectations/actions. Leading by example, assure compliance and adherence to processes including internal Business Management System, industry codes and standards, quality systems, policies, and contractual requirements. Provide overall Project Technical Leadership (PTL) duties for projects as required. Contribute to and lead process change through process enhancement, and technology introduction to achieve world‑class product development and deployment. Build customer relationships and ensure market alignment. This position requires frequent interaction with external customers, subcontractors, and cross‑functional internal teams. Take an active role and responsibility in driving proposal development and review including scope review and estimate preparation as well as technical and product presentations to the customer. Proactive and timely identification of project risks, analyze solutions, and take decisive action to resolve issues and communicate these to leadership and/or executive team as required. Provide technical direction/decisions and oversight of design activities including technical review and verification of documentation and/or drawings, as applicable. Provide assurance of health and safety associated with the execution of all projects and activities. Short‑term travel may be required for the purpose of meeting with clients and stakeholders. BAc or BSc in Electrical/Instrumentation & Control/Automation or related discipline engineering. Typically require 10 years of experience in design engineering in highly regulated and process‑based design sectors such as nuclear, aerospace, transportation, oil & gas, mining or similar. Typically require 3 years of experience in design and development, with proven success in a technical leadership role. Demonstrated ability in helping lead engineering projects and be a key design team member for complex projects over their complete EPC life cycles. Demonstrable experience with project schedules, working within budgets, financial metrics and other project management methodologies. Experience with a broad range of interdisciplinary activities: systems design, requirements development, interface design and testing. Experience working with and writing design documentation, including but not limited to: Assembly drawings Connection wiring diagrams Commissioning requirements Test procedures Exposure to a broad range of interdisciplinary departments: mechanical, software design, systems engineering and manufacturing. Creative problem‑solving skills, outstanding analytical abilities, developing leadership skills and the ability to work in a team. Flexibility to work remotely on short‑term customer site assignment. Most importantly… creative and innovative thinkers! Experience with IBM DOORS. Experience in the CANDU Nuclear Industry. Familiarity with CSA Nuclear Codes and Standards. Strong communication, presentation, and technical writing skills. General understanding of Engineering Change Control (ECC) concepts for the nuclear industry or other industries. Ability to interface with project team members, vendors and customers to ensure scope and requirements of the project are understood, and to ensure the project is executed per the project schedule and budget. Ability to work on scheduled tasks independently and interface with other team members with varying functions (project managers, mechanical designers, software designers, etc.). Ability to navigate the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC) and ensure designs comply to the CEC and other related standards.
