Instrumentation and Control Engineer At BWXT Nuclear Energy Canada Inc. (BWXT NEC), we are committed to excellence in every business initiative. We are looking for an Instrumentation and Control Engineer for our Peterborough, Ontario site. BWXT NEC's Fuel Handling and Engineered Solutions group is involved in the design, manufacture, development, testing, parts supply, and service of on‑power refueling, reactor maintenance, and nuclear medicine delivery tooling sold around the world. We are the original designer of the automated systems that allow 24/7 on‑power refueling of CANDU reactors and aim to solve some of the nuclear industry’s most challenging problems.

Our Role Reporting to the Instrumentation&Controls Engineering Manager, this role supports the technical direction for the overall project and technical interfacing to both internal and external customers. The department focuses on control systems and instrumentation within Fuel Handling Systems and related areas. Responsibilities include engineering design, troubleshooting, maintenance, and support work, using tools such as AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, and IntEC to create drawings, BOMs, and wiring diagrams.

Your Day To Day

Prepare and verify elementary drawings, schematics, electrical assembly drawings, single line diagrams, equipment specifications, and technical documents in compliance with applicable codes and standards.

Liaise with personnel from various customer groups such as design, operations, and maintenance to gather site‑specific design information.

Execute walk‑downs of equipment in the plant and prepare and present technical data to internal and external customers.

Ensure designs comply with company, technical, and regulatory standards.

Participate in design reviews and customer review meetings, providing stakeholder and design input.

Test execution and commissioning of complex equipment and systems.

Review selection of components and equipment such as motors, cables, relays, and junction boxes.

Adhere to on‑time/on‑budget criteria associated with project commitments and customer success.

Support development and estimating of engineering proposals.

Ensure designs meet manufacturability and compliance requirements.

Manage design activity, meeting milestones on‑time and on‑budget, producing defect‑free designs, and motivating a diverse team.

Assure compliance and adherence to processes, quality systems, and contractual requirements.

Present status reports, issues, solutions, and improvements, escalating resource needs as required.

Provide overall project technical leadership duties as needed.

Contribute to process change through enhancement and technology introduction for world‑class product development.

Build customer relationships and ensure market alignment.

Take an active role in proposal development, scope review, estimate preparation, and technical presentations.

Proactively identify project risks, analyze solutions, and take decisive action to resolve issues.

Provide technical direction and oversight of design activities, including review and verification of documentation and drawings.

Ensure health and safety associated with project execution.

Short‑term travel may be required for client and stakeholder meetings.

Qualifications

B.A.Sc. in Electrical/Instrumentation&Control/Automation or related Engineering discipline.

Current PEO license.

Typically 10 years of design engineering experience in regulated industries such as nuclear, aerospace, transportation, oil and gas, or mining.

At least 3 years of design and development experience with proven success in a technical leadership role.

Demonstrated ability to lead engineering projects and serve as a key design team member over complete EPC life cycles.

Experience with project schedules, budgets, financial metrics, and project management methodologies.

Broad interdisciplinary experience: systems design, requirements development, interface design, and testing.

Experience writing design documentation, including:

Assembly drawings

Elementary or schematic drawings

Connection wiring diagrams

Component specifications

Design and commissioning requirements

Test procedures

Exposure to mechanical, software design, systems engineering, and manufacturing departments.

Excellent written and oral communication skills, understandable by diverse audiences.

Creative problem‑solving skills and strong analytical abilities.

Teamwork and leadership development skills.

Flexibility to work remotely on short‑term customer site assignments.

Creative and innovative thinkers.

Desired Characteristics

Experience with IBM DOORS.

Experience in the CANDU nuclear industry.

Familiarity with CSA nuclear codes and standards.

Strong communication, presentation, and technical writing skills.

General understanding of engineering change control concepts.

Ability to interface with project teams, vendors, and customers to ensure scope and requirements are understood.

Ability to work on scheduled tasks independently and interface with other team members across functions.

Knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code and the ability to ensure design compliance.

Project management and controls training or minimum exposure to working within these controls.

The base salary range for this position in Ontario at the start of employment is expected to be between 85,000 and 126,000 per year. The total compensation package may include an annual cash incentive, medical, retirement, and other benefits. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided upon offer.
