Electrical Engineer - Senior Reporting to the Operations Manager - Engineering, the Electrical Engineer - Senior will be accountable for executing projects through sound engineering expertise and project management, engaging in relationship building activities with clients, and identifying opportunities for Magna IV Engineering. Specifically, the role focuses on solving problems involving power systems, providing technical expertise, planning and executing projects, mentoring team members, and assisting in recent business development to deliver exceptional client service through the completion of power systems projects. Responsibilities Technical expertise in electrical power systems for utilities, heavy industrial customers, and some commercial applications. Engineering knowledge and project management, business development, leadership, and mentoring as required. Engineering & Design (≈75% time) Low, medium, and high voltage electrical design. Design of industrial control schemes, development of control narratives, flex‑logic, and implementation of automatic power transfer schemes. Technical report writing, authentication, and final review of reports. Electrical power system studies (load flow, short circuit, arc flash, motor starting, harmonic evaluation, grounding, etc.). Protective relay setting development and relay setting file development. Software‑assisted electrical studies using ETAP, SKM, EasyPower, EMTP, CDGES. Application of Canadian Electrical Code C22.1 Part 1 and IEEE standards related to medium and high‑voltage installations and studies. Low, medium & high voltage switchgear design. Medium & high voltage substation design. Design of medium and high voltage protection systems (schematics and wiring). Configuration of protective relays (SEL, GE, ABB, etc.). Computation of complex relay settings and logic. Support for development of proposals and estimates. Excellent written and verbal English communication. Project Management/Support (≈15% time) Oversee all aspects of assigned projects. Plan resources effectively and collaborate with other teams and regions. Manage projects ranging from $10,000 to $500,000. Ensure all deliverables satisfy client expectations. Assign staff responsibilities and lead engineering work, drafting, QA, etc. Maintain strong client communication and rapport. Ensure safe work processes and a culture of safety. Ensure work is on time, within budget, and meets profit margins. Complete project invoicing with accounting support in a timely manner. Client Management and Business Development (≈10% time) Identify and pursue leads with existing and potential clients. Coordinate with marketing to build confidence in Magna IV Engineering’s capabilities. Network at trade shows, conferences, and seminars. Collaborate with senior staff across teams and offices for shared opportunities. Support team members in building client relationships. Draft and negotiate proposals, or delegate to sales staff. Develop proposals based on audits, studies, and client requests. Interact with clients professionally. People Leadership Coach and recognize project‑assigned personnel, but not supervise outside assignments. Provide open support for skill development. Develop and nurture personnel for current and future roles. Support employee engagement practices. Success Measurements Successful completion of engineering projects with minimal errors. Effective hours and budget management. Ability to coach and mentor others, with feedback from mentees. Requirements Minimum 7 years of experience. Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering (minimum). Licensed (P.Eng.) in British Columbia (EGBC). Capacity to perform electrical engineering design and studies independently. Experience with ETAP, SKM, EasyPower, EMTP, CDGES or equivalent software. Design power systems including switchgear, motor control centers, transformers, cables, trays, e‑houses, distribution centers, protection and control elements. Valid driver’s license and ability to travel within Alberta. Strong organizational and multi‑tasking skills. Broad knowledge of industrial, utility, and commercial environments. Capability to create protective relay program setting files; bench‑configuring relays is an asset. Strong leadership skills. Positive, self‑motivated, energetic, passionate, reliable attitude. Dedicated to providing exceptional client experiences. Excellent verbal and written communication with relationship‑management skills. Proven commitment to safety. Willingness to travel and work flexible shifts, including occasional weekends, evenings and statutory holidays. Ability to work in an office, industrial sites, and a home office. Willingness to work on an hourly basis, including above and below 40‑hour weeks during peaks and valleys.
