The Building Maintenance Worker assists the Maintenance and Environmental Services department with daily facility operations, including routine maintenance, repairs, and upkeep of buildings and grounds. Responsibilities include assisting with minor repairs, painting, cleaning, landscaping, and equipment upkeep, as well as responding to maintenance requests from staff. The role involves lifting, using basic hand tools, and working both indoors and outdoors. The role involves working in supportive housing settings and community/social service office settings. The Building Maintenance Worker handles a mix of routine, hands-on tasks that keep a building clean, secure, and functioning properly. The Building Maintenance Worker reports to the Manager of Maintenance and Environmental Services. This is an on-site position, based out of the Peterborough offices. Duties and Responsibilities - Perform minor repairs (e.g., tightening fixtures, replacing light bulbs, fixing door handles).Assist with the delivery of mentoring, guidance, and instrumental support services. - Assist with basic plumbing tasks (unclogging drains, replacing faucet washers, checking for leaks). - Support HVAC maintenance (changing filters, clearing vents). - Help with basic electrical tasks (resetting breakers, checking outlets, replacing switches under supervision). - Painting, patching walls, and touching up surfaces. - Moving furniture, setting up rooms, and assembling equipment. - Cleaning and organizing maintenance areas or storage rooms. - Lawn care: mowing, trimming, watering, and basic landscaping. - Sweeping sidewalks, clearing debris, maintaining outdoor common areas. - Conduct routine building checks (lights, doors, locks, safety equipment). - Report hazards or maintenance needs to management. - Follow safety procedures and use protective equipment properly. - Respond to digital work orders through a maintenance app or system. - Track completed tasks and update logs. - Communicate with management, staff, and housing residents about maintenance issues. Job Specifications Education, Training, and Professional Experience - Reliable, safety-conscious, and able to work both independently and as part of a team. - Possess basic technical skills, including safe use of tools and equipment and the ability to perform simple diagnostics on maintenance issues. - Some familiarity with building systems (such as lighting, HVAC filters, and plumbing fixtures) is an asset. - Should be comfortable with technology — must have basic computer skills (email, reporting, documentation) and a willingness to work on digital work-order systems, and other digital platforms. - Strong communication skills and ability to respectfully interact with diverse groups of people from all walks of life is required. Other Requirements & Working Conditions - Due to working around vulnerable populations, it is expected that the successful candidate provide and maintain a clear Police Check with Vulnerable Sector screening as a condition of employment. - This position is an on site position, working in JHSK offices and in community settings. There will be on the job travel between office locations within our catchment (Peterborough & Lindsay). Travel will be supported by the Manager of Maintenance and Environmental Services. - There may be exposure to hazards from time to time, e.g. violence, bodily fluids and waste, communicable diseases, working alone, slips trips and falls, and other exposures.
