Position Title: Environmental Scientist II Position Status: Full-Time Temporary (This position to last not later than July 17, 2027) Department: Liquid Waste Services Employee Group: Teamsters Local 31 Location: 4515 Central Boulevard, Burnaby Salary Range/Wage Rate: PG T27 $3,734.48 - $4,413.08 bi-weekly Our Liquid Waste Services Department is seeking an Environmental Scientist II who will work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team of environmental professionals to (directly or through consultants) collect, interpret, and report on various environmental effects monitoring programs including toxicity testing (and TIEs) and other environmental studies. These projects and programs pertain to the discharge of liquid waste into the local marine and freshwater setting and include the use of water quality, toxicity, sediment quality, and biological community data to understand the fate and effects of Metro Vancouver discharges, meet regulatory requirements, and inform the management of wastewater collection system and treatment plants. You are: a self-motivated team player who has demonstrated experience in working within a multi‑faced team of technicians, scientists, engineers and other professionals to meet the demands of providing high‑quality results that will inform Metro Vancouver’s liquid waste management decisions; a proficient problem‑solver equally capable to perform, or manage consultants and others performing, environmental effects monitoring programs including field work, analysis and interpretation of the environmental and toxicological data in the context of liquid waste discharges. Responsibilities Assists in the design, planning and implementation of environmental monitoring programs; investigates and identifies monitoring program requirements; prepares contract specifications and participates in the evaluation of proposals; carries out cost/benefit analysis of projects as directed; monitors project expenditures and notifies superior of overruns as required. Assists a superior in the review of consultants’ and internal technical reports for consistency, technical accuracy, and compliance with project objectives; identifies problems and corrective actions when necessary. Performs complex analysis of technical data and prepares technical reports and recommendations on environmental findings; provides guidance and assistance to internal contacts as required. Liaises with various external contacts and government agencies on environmental protocols and in meeting regulatory program requirements. Participates in special projects as required by various departments; determines project objectives and schedule of activities, carries out field work, coordinates activities of consultants and internal staff, validates and interprets results, and prepares summary reports and recommendations as required. Performs related work as required. Qualifications A recognized University Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, Biology or Environmental Science and considerable related experience OR an equivalent combination of training and experience. Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques used in conducting environmental studies related to liquid waste discharges into the receiving environment. Considerable knowledge of accepted quality control principles, procedures and methods related to the work performed. Considerable knowledge of current regulations and policies governing the work performed. Considerable knowledge of research, statistical and analytical principles, practices, procedures, methods and techniques as these relate to the work performed. Ability to perform research and analysis in technical data related to wastewater quality and environmental impact of wastewater discharges. Ability to review, prepare and maintain statistical analyses and comprehensive technical reports and recommendations. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts and to coordinate components of work projects involving internal and external agencies. Valid Driver’s Licence for the Province of British Columbia.
