Program Overview This paid work experience program offers aspiring or practicing educators and youth mentors the opportunity to deliver summer school programming to secondary students in northern Indigenous communities. Instructors will gain practical tutoring/teaching experience and develop group management strategies while supporting students in subjects such as English, French, History (in English & French), Math (in English & French), and Science (in English & French). This chance requires temporary relocation to a northern community. The program (approx dates: Jun 22-Aug 6th, 2026) begins with two weeks of training and preparations at our Riverstone Campus in Durham, Ontario. During this time, instructors will review materials and academic resources for their assigned subjects. Training will also include support strategies, classroom and group management, exam invigilation, and cultural sensitivity. Following training, instructors will travel in teams to an assigned northern community. Each instructor will be required to provide academic support in two different subjects. The program schedule will run Monday to Friday: - Morning session: 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM - Afternoon session: 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM - With prep time, the typical workday is 8:30am-4:30pm The program concludes with a series of final exams. Instructors will support Local Coordinators in following proper exam invigilation procedures.Accommodations are provided during both training and community placements. All travel costs associated with the program are covered. Responsibilities - Deliver summer school programming to high school students in preparation for final exams. - Assist in setting up and maintaining an organized, clean learning space - Adapt academic support strategies to meet diverse student needs - Create a safe, inclusive, and engaging learning setting - Collaborate with co-instructors and local coordinators - Attend all training sessions and apply learned strategies - Track attendance and submit weekly reports in the required format - Deliver programming in accordance with ET Educators’ Code of Conduct and support the mission of Elephant Thoughts - Facilitate exam invigilation while respecting Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and exam integrity procedures - Assist with class lists, scheduling, and lesson planning - Allocate time for reviewing attendance, content development, and meetings with management Other Benefits - Daily meal stipend of $40–$50 while travelling or working in an assigned community (meals provided during training period) - All travel costs covered to/from assigned community (fuel, flights, baggage, etc.) - All lodging/accommodations provided for the duration of the program Requirements - Bilingual (English/French) - Tutoring or teaching experience - Current police clearance report (including vulnerable sector screening) or able to obtain one - Ability to work independently with minimal supervision - Strong student engagement and motivation skills - Flexible, energetic, culturally sensitive, and a strong team player - Punctual, reliable, and open to new experiences - Ability to work full-time (40 hours/week) and live in a remote area - Comfortable traveling and adapting to new environments Assets (Preferred Qualifications) - Valid Canadian driver’s license with a clean driving record - Current First Aid & CPR certification - Bilingual (English/French) - Certified teacher - Educational background in History, Math, Science, English, or French How to Apply If this program sounds of interest to you, you meet the requirements, and the contract timing will work with your schedule, please send in an application/resume.
