About the Organization At Local Engineering, we are an Alberta based engineering services provider supporting a select group of recurring clients. Local’s unique approach is to develop a long‐term relationship with our clients, becoming the “owner’s engineer” and prioritizing client needs. We have a wide-ranging and diverse client base to help stabilize our workload when some markets are in a downturn. The growing Local Engineering team is small but nimble, with a one‑of‑a‑kind collaborative team environment. Job Summary The Intermediate / Senior Piping Designer will lead and take ownership of providing piping design services including 3D CAD design, creating drawings from preliminary concepts, sketches, and calculations, revising drawings as needed and preparing documentation packages and sets for sustainable capital and operational facility‑based projects. The pace of work is fast and changes from day to day, which requires an agile person who can manage and execute many activities simultaneously in a challenging environment while adhering to project scope, budget and schedule. Education & Qualifications Diploma in piping design and drafting technology such as NAIT Mechanical Engineering Technology, Engineering Design and Drafting Technology (EDDT) discipline, or equivalent, or substantial demonstrated work experience in this field. Preference will be given to a candidate with at least 5 years of progressive design experience, however team fit is most important Experience with design software such as AutoCAD, Plant3D, CADWorx, Inventor, SolidWorks, and/or MicroStation including 2D and 3D modeling. Proficiency integrating 3D point clouds into working models Experience preparing drawings including P&IDs;, plot plans, G/As, layouts, isometrics, piping details, and equipment details Registered as a CET with ASET, or eligible for registration, is considered an asset. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite programs used to create reports and documents. Site/field based industrial work experience is considered an asset. Experience with 3D scanning is considered an asset. Experience or familiarity with electrical drawings is considered an asset. Familiarity with industry codes and client standards and ability to apply them independently Responsibilities Independently execute mechanical/piping design activities within a scope of work which includes everything from conceptual design development through to detailed design, procurement support, construction support and commissioning, and use of design software, depending on the needs of the client. Read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications to deliver high quality client service that maintains technical excellence, budget, schedule, and contractual requirements. Complete CAD design work and develop piping designs in 2D/3D including correcting any deviations from drawings to meet project specs. Lead and check the work of other design team members. Create material take-offs, cost estimates, modeling and simulations, PFDs, P&IDs; and other drawings as required. Actively engage directly with clients to understand their requirements and expectations and deliver top quality solutions. Work with and develop piping and equipment specifications as needed. Prepare piping designs according to the defined contractual scope and execution strategy. Review and issue drawings and calculations, following Local standards and procedures. Provide additional support as needed including learning the work requirements of other disciplines to deliver well‑rounded design solutions and work packages to clients. Identify and liaise with potential new clients to support the growth of the team and company. Collaborate with external Senior Mechanical Designers and Engineers for support and development on more challenging tasks. Travel to the field for project scoping, verification, construction support and meeting with clients as needed. Demonstrate commitment to safety and quality Provide mentorship and technical guidance to more junior team members. Report to the Mechanical Department Manager on progress of work. Alternatively, contractor or short‑term arrangements may be considered. Salary is commensurate with ASET salary scale. Job is typically performed in an office environment. Site travel may be required depending on the project.
