C-FER has a world-wide reputation for helping the pipeline industry with the implementation of pipeline projects in challenging environments such as the Arctic and deepwater. The work currently involves leading edge projects in the areas of full-scale testing, integrity management and leak detection, which are of major importance for the energy industry in Alberta, Canada and worldwide. C-FER operates a world-class laboratory for full-scale testing of pipelines and special structures; as such, we employ a team of talented engineers and technologists who specialize in developing innovative testing systems, conducting advanced structural and fluid systems modeling, and executing large projects. What You’ll Do: Primarily based onsite at C-FER’s 3712 Roper Road, Edmonton, Alberta facility, the Integrity Management & Structures Department has an immediate opening for a qualified Project Engineer with a strong desire to work with a dynamic and specialized engineering team to address technical challenges in the energy industry. Reporting to the Engineering Department Manager, Integrity Management & Structures, the successful candidate will actively participate in and lead the execution of custom, large-scale and full-scale tests. Execution may include technical design, test apparatus design, installation, commissioning and operation as well as project management. The ability to identify industry need, communicate with clients and develop business proposals will also be considered a strong asset as well as a differentiator in the selection process. Key responsibilities include: - Designing and modeling engineering systems and unique testing systems; - Leading project teams consisting of junior engineers and technologists; - Creating and maintaining project schedules to track costs and schedule (eg, MS Project); - Reporting project progress to clients and internal stakeholders; - Preparing technical proposals and reports for clients and other project stakeholders; - Establishing, developing and managing relationships with clients; - Conducting sub-scale and full-scale tests under combined loading and extreme conditions; - Researching the latest standardized material testing methodologies, guidelines and safety standards; - Conducting marketing and business development activities such as presentations to clients and attendance at industry conferences, etc.; - Making formal presentations to lead and influence project and department decisions; - Identifying new business opportunities and qualifying them with the assistance of management; - Building and maintaining strong relationships with clients and industry partners to identify industry challenges and deliver practical solutions; and - Providing technical guidance and mentorship to less experienced employees. Your qualifications: - A B.Sc. in Mechanical or Civil Engineering with five to nine years of relevant engineering experience, particularly in pipeline design, construction and maintenance, and experience working in a consulting engineering environment; - A Professional Engineering (PEng) designation with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA), or alternatively, registered as an Engineer-in-Training and working towards a PEng designation; - Solid understanding of engineering and science fundamentals and an ability to apply this knowledge to problem solving; - Experience with full-scale testing and knowledge in areas of structural design, mechanical systems, materials and instrumentation; - Advanced solid modelling and/or engineering drawing experience (eg, Solidworks, AutoCAD, Inventor); - Experience reviewing technical drawings in Solidworks; - Strong work ethic, together with excellent interpersonal and team building skills, and a positive attitude; - Excellent oral and written English communication skills, and experience in preparing comprehensive technical reports and proposals; - Excellent project budget estimation, planning and project management skills including the use of Microsoft Project; - Mechanical aptitude and a “hands-on” approach to learning and task execution; - Self-motivated, with a strong work ethic and drive for continuous learning; - Demonstrated ability to build long-term relationships with clients, colleagues and other stakeholders; - Strong commitment to following safety policies, guidelines and best practices, including the use of required personal protective equipment (PPE), such as hard hats and respiratory protection; - Ability to legally work in Canada, and for C-FER Technologies; - Ability to travel and work outside of Canada; and - Ability to work on-site daily (ie, no remote or hybrid work). In addition, one or more of the following would be considered an asset: - Experience with 5S workplace organization methodology; - Understanding of engineering challenges faced by the energy industry; - A network of contacts in industry; - Involvement in energy industry associations; and/or - A post-graduate degree in mechanical or civil engineering.
