Location: Edson, Alberta

Start Date: July 6, 2026

Hours of work: 37.5 hours per week (1.0 FTE), Monday to Friday

Reports to: Director, Transportation Services

Competition will remain open until June 5, 2026 at 12:00 pm MST.

Background The Transportation Lead plays a key leadership role in ensuring legislative compliance, operational safety, driver competency, and the continuous improvement of transportation services. This position reports directly to the Director of Transportation Services and works collaboratively with trainers, bus drivers, heavy‑duty technicians, school administrators, and other division staff to promote a strong culture of safety and accountability.

Roles and Responsibilities

Lead the Division Driver Training School and deliver Class 2, S‑Endorsement, refresher, and routine safety training.

Supervise Licensed Driving Instructors (LDI), provide ongoing training and routine evaluations.

Conduct driver evaluations (new hires, in‑training, return to work) and routine assessments of existing drivers.

Conduct functional assessments and post‑incident reviews.

Maintain accurate training and competency records while promoting consistent professional and safety expectations.

Ensure the Division remains in compliance with National Safety Code standards, Alberta Transportation regulations, and Alberta Education requirements, including reviewing the Division Carrier Profile and Safety&Maintenance plan.

Manage Class 2 road test appointments.

Coordinate external training programs for drivers, including Air Brakes and First Aid.

Assist the Director with collision investigations and transportation‑related incidents, document findings and recommend corrective actions.

Monitor compliance with trip inspections, hours of service, maintenance records, and CVIP requirements.

Conduct internal audits of records in collaboration with the Director of Transportation Services.

Conduct safety assessments of bus stops, routes, loading zones, and yard operations, identifying hazards and recommending risk‑reduction strategies.

Manage the annual Route Assessment review process.

Foster a positive safety culture through clear communication, safety education for students and staff, and leadership of safety meetings and continuous improvement initiatives.

Partner with internal routing and operations staff to ensure safety considerations are embedded in daily service delivery.

Lead student and driver safety initiatives, including the“Buddy’s Grande Yellow Bus Adventure” and semi‑annual bus evacuation drills.

Support inclement weather assessments and collaborate with external partners to monitor road conditions for service continuity.

Coordinate assessment and deployment of specialized transportation equipment (e.g., harnesses and other supports) under the Director’s direction and Division safety requirements.

Act as the department lead for the Division’s OH&S team.

Requirements

Demonstrated knowledge of National Safety Code standards and Alberta transportation legislation.

Experience in school bus operations, fleet compliance, or transportation safety management.

Strong investigative, analytical, and documentation skills.

Well‑developed interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.

Ability to provide effective coaching, training, and performance feedback.

Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Suite products.

Valid Class 1 or 2 operator’s licence with S‑Endorsement.

In‑Vehicle Class 2 and School Bus Driver Improvement Program Instructor Certificate (or willingness to obtain).
