Job Title Dir, Government Relations Job Details Job Level: E Date Posted: May 27, 2026 Closing Date: June 10, 2026 Job Type: Full-time Permanent Category: Internal/External Opportunities Location: Calgary Job Description Reporting to the VP, External Affairs, the Director, Government Relations is accountable for leading a team and supporting senior leadership in the development and execution of the organization’s government engagement strategy, ensuring alignment with overall business objectives and external positioning. The Director monitors emerging policy and regulatory developments, provides strategic advice, and represents the organization with key stakeholders and partners. Responsibilities Lead the development and execution of AltaLink’s municipal, provincial and federal government relations strategy, aligned with corporate, regulatory, and business priorities. Anticipate and assess emerging political, legislative, regulatory, and fiscal risks and opportunities, translating them into actionable strategic advice. Ensure consistency between policy positions, regulatory filings, and external engagement. Lead AltaLink’s participation and leadership in industry coalitions, trade associations, and multi‑stakeholder initiatives, ensuring alignment with company positions. Identify and pursue strategic partnerships to advance shared policy objectives, collaborating with peer utilities to advance system‑level solutions. Represent AltaLink in meetings with Ministers’ offices, senior officials, regulators, municipalities, and industry counterparts. Lead a team of talented qualified(s) to grow their skillsets and help them achieve their career ambitions along with AltaLink’s goals. Collaborate with team members in External Affairs, as well as cross‑functional leaders, on various policy files and initiatives. Support preparation of Board‑level materials related to public policy and government engagement. Demonstrate key behaviors and meet identified expectations outlined in the four cultural pillars – one team, continuous improvement, customer focus and personal accountability. Qualifications Related post‑secondary education, or a combination of education and experience. Minimum 15 years of progressive experience in government relations, public policy, or political environments. Experience in the electricity sector is considered an asset. Proven leadership ability, proven management and leadership role experience of 10+ years. Proven ability/experience in the above noted responsibilities. Deep understanding of Alberta’s provincial government, agencies, and regulators; as well as municipal and federal experience. A deep understanding of Alberta’s electricity agencies, electricity development and regulatory processes, electricity policy, wholesale power markets in Alberta, regional interconnections, and transmission policy, planning, and cost recovery, considered an asset. Experience navigating regulated or infrastructure‑intensive sectors (utilities, energy, transportation, telecommunications). Electricity experience considered an asset. Demonstrated ability in translating complex policy and regulatory environments into clear recommendations. Demonstrated ability to advise senior executives and influence enterprise‑level decision‑making. Demonstrated ability to grow a team of talented individuals. Strong presentation and written communication skills. Professional demeanor, effective communication and interpersonal skills to interface with team members and customers to promote positive customer outcomes. Team player with the ability to work cross‑functionally within and lead multi‑discipline teams including Finance, Legal, Regulatory, Operations, and Engineering.
