Description
PRIMARY PURPOSE To provide fundamental engineering principles and methods for forensic structural and building damage assessments to determine the origin and cause of failure/damage for residential, commercial and industrial buildings and sites. Further, to use recognized design principles to complete design of structural restoration and repair works including reconstruction design, building permits, foundation underpinning related to oil spill remediation, snow load and roof failures, and cost estimations through repair scope development. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES Inspect buildings and sites as prescribed by company policy and industry standards. Document existing site conditions using scaled sketches and/or diagrams, measurements, evidence collection, and photographic documentation. Utilize appropriate engineering survey, monitoring, and measuring equipment. Conduct interviews with points of contact and/or interested parties to obtain background/historical information. Research a variety of technical issues including building codes, standards, technical papers, textbooks, design manuals, handbooks, best practice guides, and internet resources. Analyze available data, develop conclusions, and draft technical reports. Handle records of assignments, referrals, follow‑ups with claims adjusters, interviews with property owners and witnesses, etc. Complete building restoration designs to support applications for building permits for reconstruction. Mentor professional staff in the field of expertise, overseeing their professional development. Promote superior customer service and responsiveness to customer needs. Complete all forensic investigations in a timely manner. Provide written reports that are clear and concise and conform to EFI Global policies and industry standards. Promote EFI Global capabilities to expand business opportunities with client companies. Sustain current knowledge of approved forensic engineering investigation practices. Develop and maintain positive relationships with clients, colleagues, subcontractors, and prospects. ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES Comply with company safety programs and standards. Properly utilize personal protective equipment. Exercise appropriate use, care, and maintenance of equipment (company owned or leased). Comply with company standards and best practices regarding storage of equipment. Meet or exceed productivity levels and daily time submission as determined by manager. Comply with all human resources policies, programs, and initiatives. Perform all other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS Education & Licensing: Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from a recognized university and a registered professional engineer (P.Eng.) in the province of the position. Advanced degrees preferred. Experience: Ten (10) plus years of engineering experience or equivalent combination of experience and education, with some introduction to forensic sciences discipline. Knowledge: Fundamental concepts, practices, procedures, general terms, conditions, nomenclature associated with the insurance industry and assigned area of engineering specialty. Forensic engineering investigation experience is a plus. Skills & Knowledge: Excellent oral and written communication; PC literate, including Microsoft Office products; analytical and interpretive skills; strong organizational skills; excellent interpersonal skills; ability to work independently or in a team; ability to meet or exceed performance competencies. WORK SETTING Travel at least 30‑40% of the time; local or across provincial boundaries. Exposure to all weather elements, walking, climbing, etc., as required. Occasional lifting up to 50 pounds, as required. 40‑60% of work in field environment.
