Are you an Occupational Health and Safety professional who enjoys turning programs into practice? Edmonton Public Library (EPL) is seeking an experienced and team-oriented Safety Consultant to join our Safety & Security team for up to one year. This is a hands‑on, project focused prospect to advance EPL’s safety program, embed it into day‑to‑day operations, and ensure managers are confident and capable in carrying out their safety responsibilities. What we're looking for: Reporting to the Manager, Safety & Security, the Safety Consultant will be brought on to support a defined body of work fully embedding and implementing EPL’s existing safety program across the organization. Working closely with managers across EPL, the Safety Consultant will help translate safety expectations into everyday practice, support manager‑led investigations, and deliver targeted training to build confidence and consistency in how safety is approached across EPL. Duties include: Working directly with branch and department managers to translate EPL’s safety program into consistent day‑to‑day practice across the organization. Supporting managers in understanding, applying, and becoming confident in their safety responsibilities. Identifying strengths, gaps, and inconsistencies in safety practices and working with managers to address them. Providing practical, real‑time guidance to help managers respond to safety issues as they arise. Supporting follow‑up and documentation related to safety inspections, action items, and corrective measures. Conducting safety‑related investigations under the direction of the Manager, Safety & Security. Advising and supporting managers in conducting investigations, with a focus on fact‑finding, documentation, legislative and procedural requirements, and identifying root causes and corrective actions. Auditing manager‑led investigations to ensure they are timely, thorough, and compliant. Assessing branch‑level safety training needs, identifying common challenges or gaps, and working with managers to develop practical action plans. Delivering safety training and information sessions to managers and staff across the library system. Supporting onboarding and refresher training related to safety expectations and processes. Contributing to the development and updating of safety training materials, guides, and job aids. Ideal candidate skills: Ability to apply and interpret Alberta OHS legislative requirements in a practical operational setting. Ability to facilitate group learning, explain safety expectations clearly, and adapt messaging to different audiences and branch realities. Experience supporting onboarding, refresher training, and safety coaching. Proven ability to work collaboratively with managers, supervisors, and staff in a supportive role focused on education and enablement. Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare clear investigation reports, inspections, and follow‑up documentation. Ability to identify when issues can be resolved at the branch level and when escalation is required. Robust proficiency in using office and collaboration tools (Microsoft Office, Teams, SharePoint, shared document systems, reporting tools) to support day‑to‑day work. Job requirements: Degree, Diploma, or Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety or a related field. Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CSRT) certification and/or certification through a Partnerships in Injury Reduction (PIR)–recognized certifying partner is preferred, such as Alberta Municipal Health and Safety Association (AMHSA) certification (e.g., Recognized Municipal Health and Safety Advisor). Alberta Construction Safety Association (NCSO) certification (e.g., NCSO, HSA) considered an asset. 3–5 years of progressive professional experience in occupational health and safety, preferably in a large, distributed, or public‑facing organization. Experience working in a unionized environment and library/not‑for‑profit is an asset. Demonstrated experience supporting the implementation of an existing safety program in day‑to‑day operations. Experience conducting or supporting workplace investigations, including documentation, root cause analysis, and corrective action tracking is preferred. Experience delivering safety training, information sessions, or toolbox talks to frontline staff and/or leaders is an asset. Valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s license with access to a vehicle to travel within the City of Edmonton is required. Note: Satisfactory background screening is required for this position which includes a Criminal Record Check/Police Information Check and Academic Credential Verification.
