Clark Builders is hiring a Senior Accountant to lead fiscal management and financial administration for large construction projects. Responsibilities Set up, lead, oversee and implement procedures for mega projects ($200MM+), including complex contract types, joint ventures, specialty building types and national clients. Ensure client contractual requirements are met in regard to billing and accounts receivable, including contract analysis to determine billing deadlines, payment terms, billable and non‑reimbursable expenses, insurance and fee billing agreements, and approved billing rates for staff and trade labor. Create a supportive environment for a high‑performing finance team, provide training opportunities, and engage in mentoring relationships. Supervise assistant accountants and/or accounting clerks, provide timely performance feedback, and contribute to performance appraisals during the annual performance cycle using talent management systems. Audit client billing and project ledgers regularly, ensuring contract requirements, GAAP and company policies are met. Implement and maintain internal control safeguards for the project. Manage accounts payable for vendor invoice processing, ensuring proper sales and use tax are accounted for and accounts remain up to date. Manage accounts payable for subcontractor invoice processing, ensure all required lien waivers, contracts and insurance requirements are submitted prior to scheduling payments, and report payment issues to project team. Ensure month‑close process by posting or accruing all client bills and project costs for material work in place. Update monthly project assets and rentals for insurance documentation with the project team. Manage project financial closeout, ensuring final contract amount and closeout documentation requirements are met and agreed to by subcontractors before issuing final payments. Provide cash position reporting concerning net assets, liabilities and unfunded work in place, and communicate potential risks or profitability to the project team. Assist with all internal and external audit requests. Coordinate preparation of financial reports, special analyses and informational reports for the project. Other activities, duties and responsibilities as assigned. Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or a related field and 5 years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education or experience. Construction industry experience preferred. Experience supervising or managing a small team preferred. Solid understanding of accounting principles and company policies, able to educate and enforce policies. Ability to read and understand financial reports. Analytic ability to review and assess financial data, interpret trends, and recognize inconsistencies. Apply critical thinking to manage complex decisions and judgments. Understand accounting implications of various contract terms. Display actions related to profitability and risk management and effectively communicate risk management issues. Exercise independent judgment and discretion with ability to identify problems and initiate corrective action. Apply innovation to offer and implement suggestions to improve overall operations. Ability to manage competing activities, requests and short‑cycle deadlines simultaneously. Observe performance and effectively provide performance feedback. High proficiency in financial system applications, SAP and Textura experience, advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel. Self‑motivated, adaptable and flexible to operate with minimal direction and little or no supervision while working in a complex and changing environment. Lead by example and set standards for performance and behavior; act with integrity and professionalism, strong dedication to teamwork. High degree of organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail. Professional written and verbal communication skills. Regular travel to site locations and between the Edmonton and Calgary offices is required. Ready to build your career with us?
