Description
Role Description We are seeking a Senior Naval Architect to lead the design, technical oversight, analysis, and lifecycle support of marine vessels and related infrastructure. This role provides senior‑level engineering expertise across vessel design, modification, maintenance, regulatory compliance, and project execution in support of marine operations, research vessels, and industrial marine services.
Responsibilities
Lead vessel modification, refit, and upgrade projects
Prepare and review vessel drawings, calculations, technical specifications, and engineering documentation
Manage marine engineering projects from concept development through execution and close‑out
Conduct stability assessments, weight studies, structural evaluations, and performance analyses
Support vessel inspections, surveys, and technical evaluations
Liaise with shipyards, contractors, vessel crews, technical consultants, regulatory agencies, clients, and third‑party inspectors as required
Monitor project schedules, budgets, deliverables, and technical performance
Ensure compliance with applicable marine regulations and classification requirements, including Transport Canada, and classification societies such as DNV and Lloyd’s Register
Support vessel certifications, audits, and regulatory submissions
Provide engineering support to vessel operations and maintenance activities
Assist with troubleshooting technical and structural issues affecting vessel performance
Support dry dockings, vessel mobilizations, and off‑season maintenance programs
Identify opportunities for operational efficiency and cost savings
Evaluate emerging marine technologies and engineering solutions
Support development of innovative vessel systems and operational capabilities
Ensure engineering activities are completed in accordance with company safety policies and quality standards
Qualifications
Degree in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, or related discipline.
Professional Engineer designation (P.Eng.) or eligibility for registration preferred.
7–15+ years of relevant marine engineering or naval architecture experience.
Experience with vessel design software and engineering analysis tools.
Strong understanding of vessel operations, shipbuilding, and regulatory compliance.
Strong understanding of marine operations, vessel logistics, and port project delivery.
Work Conditions
This role operates in a dynamic, high‑accountability environment requiring flexibility to work outside standard business hours to support operational demands, incident response, and time‑sensitive reporting requirements.
Primarily office‑based in St. John’s, NL, with regular travel to vessels, shipyards, industrial workshops, and port facilities as required.
Frequent interaction with vessel crews, technical teams, clients, and external stakeholders in both office and field settings.
