Description
SMI Automation is a renowned designer and builder of custom automation equipment, custom manufactured machinery and robotics within the transportation, oil and gas, and mining industry. We offer inclusive solutions for custom manufacturing and processing needs with secondary tooling to support – de-flash, cooling, drilling or routing, punching, assembly, and bonding stations. Our machines are used to assemble and bond large body sub-assemblies for heavy trucks, robotically machined openings in the products, apply adhesive, transfer and assemble components and other complex assemblies, no matter the size. We are actively recruiting a Mechanical Engineering Manager to join our team. This role is responsible for defining strategic direction for design teams, fostering strong cross-functional collaboration, and ensuring the consistent delivery of products and automated systems. The Mechanical Engineering Manager provides leadership to the design team while driving scalable processes, maintaining high design standards, and advancing strategic initiatives that strengthen the effectiveness of the design function. This position reports to the VP of Operations and collaborates with Controls and Assembly departments. Job Duties: - Advance department planning and capacity management to ensure long‑term organizational readiness and scalability. - Manage corporate and departmental strategy by actively contributing to strategic planning cycles and organizational initiatives. - Steer key design performance indicators to drive operational excellence, financial discipline, and continuous improvement. - Proactively identify and address potential operational or delivery risks. - Support strong customer relationships through timely and effective design support for downstream inquiries and issues. - Remove operational roadblocks and drive resolution to ensure smooth operations. - Oversee workforce planning activities including payroll approval, job hour allocation, and vacation scheduling to optimize team productivity. - Demonstrate and uphold professional standards on all interactions. - Enhance team skills by providing focused technical coaching, mentorship, and knowledge‑sharing. Qualifications: - Ten years’ (10) design and engineering supervision experience required. - Strong computer, problem solving, and organizational skills. - Excellent written and oral communication skills are required. · Ability to work independently, meet goals and tight deadlines. - Ability to lead teams and initiatives at scale. - Strong proficiency in SolidWorks software. - Experience with Siemens Process Simulate, Robot Master or other types of 3D simulation software would be considered an asset. - Proven ability to track complex challenges using analytical precision, and an optimistic, proactive approach. · Experience in the design or application of general automated assembly cells and experience with plastic bonding, dispensing systems would be an asset. · Able and willing to travel internationally, as required Commitment to our Team: You will gain extensive process and product experience to expand your knowledge and personal development in a family-oriented culture that promotes engagement and work/ life balance. · SMI Automation (Canada) Inc. is an equal opportunity employer.
