Job Overview Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences is seeking a Recreation Therapist to provide specialized care to patients with complex mental illnesses. The role requires a recovery‑focused model of care built upon compassion, inspiration, and hope. Department and Role The Recreation Therapist will assess, develop, implement, and evaluate individualized and group therapeutic recreation programs. Responsibilities also include providing functional and strength‑based social‑skill programs that support treatment, rehabilitation, and recovery for a geriatric population. The Therapeutic Recreationist works as an integral part of the interdisciplinary team and contributes to patients’ Plans of Care. Assignment The assignment involves supporting the three inpatient units within the Geriatric Program, which provide specialized services for older adults with dementia or a severe and persistent mental illness presenting with complex behaviours. The goal is to stabilize patients so they can transition to community, long‑term care, or the referring organization. Key Notes Although the vacancy is for the GNP, Recreation Therapists must be able to work in any area of Ontario Shores as patient needs dictate. Requirements Degree or diploma in Therapeutic Recreation and 2 years related experience. Knowledge of current therapeutic recreation practices, theories, and methodologies. Current TRO membership required; eligible registration with TRO is preferred. Knowledge of recovery and mental illness, including treatment practices. Ability to implement appropriate treatment, leisure education, and participation programs. Skills in therapeutic recreation assessment and program design. Experience in a mental‑health setting (preference given to individuals with DD knowledge/experience). Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, computer skills, and ability to liaise with community agencies. Ability to maintain regular attendance and perform the physical demands of the position. Valid driver’s license and CPR Level HCP (Health Care Provider) certification.
